Indeed, I was planning to wait until we all had descended.

My torch and flint would probably be topside, having pulled both from my bag when we were discussing how (or if) we should use a torch (and my bag is not down here). Since they'd be up, Alexis might allow you to have brought them down with you (since it's dark down here and you can't see).

What faith do you profess, Engelhart?

I'm a Protestant Christian and the line drawn by my paltry knowledge of protestantism kind of stops me there. I'm not sure if the particular denomination is important to spell effects, Alexis can straighten that out.

I move quickly now, removing my backpack and coat, readying a torch to the point of lighting it, holstering my hammer and grabbing a hold of my crossed holy symbol.

I whisper tersely to my companions amidst all this: "Stand well back and follow the sound of my voice, I'm about to shine the Lord's own Light upon what lies beyond."

Lothar's placement is already pitch-perfect; other than that, my own position on the board will be rather relevant, I'm assuming I'm to be near Aleksandra's present hex.

AND things get complicated. Lots of confusion. I'll try to clarify, but things are coming from everywhere, and some of it on the wrong post.

Sorry, Engelhart ~ the moment that Aleksandra tossed a rock, it was done; you're not actually in a position to see what Aleksandra is doing or why ~ remember that the hole is only waist-wide and there is three feet of roof, so your angle of awareness would be very minimal.

I don't assume that Aleksandra is holding onto the rock, because Aleksandra said she wasn't. She's thrown the rock ~ all I want to know is what she rolls on a d20 in terms of success; Aleksandra, if you would be so kind as to roll a d20.

Engelhart, I'm confused by your mimickry for an unlit torch and the flint. When you are doing this, you are still outside, standing with Gudbrand and Rowan.

Aleksandra, your statement that you were "planning to wait" is thrown all to hell by your actually throwing the rock. At the same time, you could not reasonably have any idea of Engelhart's wanting a torch and flint.

Deep breath now.

Engelhart, I can't let you retcon anything that has happened. Lothar and Aleksandra are already down the hole, it is TOO LATE to cast bless on them. Moreover, there was plenty of opportunity for you to do so earlier, as getting in the hole took about three days of real time, so you had lots of opportunity to bring that up before anyone took out keystones and entered the barrow.

Moreover, even though you are Protestant (and we'll get to that), NONE of the other members of the party are of any religion, because no one stated as much prior to leaving Stavanger. IF they did want to be your religion, then they should have said so, then gotten baptised, back when they were in town. They didn't, so they aren't of your religion, even if they say so now. There was opportunity to discuss all this before going on this adventure, but no one did, no one brought it up, including you, the cleric. Even when I said to pick a religion, when you were creating your character, you ignored me and it is only now that I am learning what religion you have.

But I have no hard feelings about it, nor am I punishing you. It is simply something that should have been addressed when it could be addressed, not now.

Next point.

In general, it would be more convenient if all the characters stated their actions in reference only to THEMSELVES and not to other characters. For example, I would prefer if Rowan had said, "I am not going down the hole now" or "next", rather than stating that he will be "fifth", which is in reference to the other characters. What if someone else then states, "I will be fifth"? In the same way, Engelhart, you say you're the third going down the hole when "next" would make more sense. Since Gudbrand already stated that he was going down too, FIRST, so technically, Gudbrand is 3rd.

I make the point for the sake of clarity. It is simply easier if your actions are self-referential. I recognize that there is a need to "save time" by attempting to assume that all the characters gather together to be blessed (as they will in the future), but when everyone is doing this at the same time the result is just a cacophony of confusion. Surely, members of the party have already seen this. For example, the long lead up to Aleksandra actually throwing the rock or the incredibly long lead up to removing the keystones, because people were constantly describing what they wanted other characters to do.

This can work at a table, but it doesn't work well in text. We finally made headway when people only stated WHAT THEY THEMSELVES DID, period.

Please try to keep it at that level. It will just be easier for everyone.

It is quite clear that Engelhart did not notice that Gudbrand had beaten him to the punch, that Gudbrand was going down third. Then, once again, TO SAVE TIME, Engelhart tried to assume a) that he had already gone down the hole; and b) that he was there to aid Gudbrand's landing; and then c) that Rowan obviously came next, so that his spear could be returned, so that finally d) he could take up a position next to Aleksandra and Lothar.

Engelhart, sorry, you're not running this adventure.

No one here should be assuming that ANYONE does anything until I say it happens.

Let's say that Engelhart does go down before Gudbrand, as Engelhart presumed. AND THEN, SOMEONE ON THE SURFACE ATTACKS Gudbrand and Rowan! Can Engelhart be sure that won't happen? Absolutely not. So please don't assume that any character's actions automatically produce a predictable result. Just say what you do. Then I will tell you if that "doing" worked or not. Then we can move forward.

Don't. Save. Time.

I know it sounds logical, but in fact it isn't. It just creates communication problems, as everyone tries to save time at the same time, and no one knows what the hell anyone is doing. Speak for YOUR character . . . and ONLY your character, please.

Sorry, Engelhart. You're getting the brunt of this, because you came in late last night with a lot to say and to offer; but you're not the only one who is doing it. Relax. Take your time. There's no hurry. The TPK will come soon enough.

Okay, let's pick up. Gudbrand's statement to go down happened on the other thread at 11:43 PM (my time). Aleksandra threw the rock at 10:30. Therefore, Gudbrand is still on top, as is Engelhart and Rowan. Only Aleksandra and Lothar are actually in the barrow at the time the rock was thrown.

All actions are suspended until I get a d20 roll from Aleksandra.

Could we please discuss any issues having to do with communication and the campaign on the "Appearance" thread, so that we can keep this thread clean for actions/gaming. I am more than willing to answer any questions and assure everyone that there is no real problem ~ just a desire for greater clarity.

Luckily for you, however, hex 1008 ~ which you threw the rock at ~ is actually only 3 hexes away from you and not glowing. So nothing happens.

I think you may have counted in the opposite direction from your intention . . . but psyche!

As Lothar waves at his companions and says his words, and as Gudbrand more or less simultaneously starts to come down the twine to land safely on the ground near the ranger . . .

Aleksandra's movement puts her only four hexes from the glow in 1205. From that vantage point, she can see the top edge of what appears to be a large yellow egg, perhaps a foot in diameter.

The egg is a foot in diameter, Aleksandra. It seems to be contributing in part to the glow . . . and as you watch, it shifts downwards.

I'll be representing your character with a stand-in until I get Engelhart finished and then yours ~ he got his description in before you. It'll be a simple representation.

Could you indicate which hex below the entrance that you wish to take up a place in? You can see that the image above has been upgraded so it can be easily read. Please choose any hex where the last two numbers are 08 or higher; just for now ~ you can move up afterwards. We're getting close to a round-by-round movement, since something seems to be out there.

The hardest part of doing Lothar is actually getting a good balance on his 98 lbs. size. I messed with the length of his arms for quite a while. Sorry, Lothar, I decided to have your leather armor under your dress; let me know if there's something you'd like changed:

I have to say that drawing "wheaten" hair against a pale nordic skin presents a contrast issue: but I still think this works for Rowan the Druid, who was next in the order:

This one makes me think the player is just trying to push me to see what I'll do. This is my first character with a beard; I tried something different with the war hammer (which I'm yet unhappy with), and I even got the cross in:

And here, at last, is Gudbrand. I tried to make his hair straighter than that of the other characters, but I didn't seem to manage it. No question, there are still limits on hair. I'm not really happy with the clenched, hand, either ~ looks like a prosthetic. But at least this looks something like the picture for Gudbrand's character:

In my defense, note that I didn't make an angle for anything that I thought was unimportant or spurious. Standing out from the crowd is defo important.

My only quibble would be that I envisioned wielding more of a blockheaded warhammer, definitely more barbaric and less sofisticated than the one represented. I only quibble because I've noticed you can change things up, else I'd stay shut.

Lastly, have I mentioned how big the hammer is? I mean, not unlike I'm compensating for something or anything like that! *wink*

I have never been clear on the lowering of the torch concept. If the twine is tied to the handle of the torch, than the fire will curl up the shaft of the torch towards the twine; it can be lowered soon enough that the fire won't envelop the twine, but not if the torch is held in that position for a long time. Moreover, the twine can't be tied in the middle of the torch; the twine has to be balanced towards the oil cloth of the torch that burns, making it difficult to get the burning torch through the hole, if the torch is perpendicular to the hole when it is lit and then lowered. And obviously, if the twine is tied on the burning end . . .

But let's just say I'm quibbling. The party is standing out in the light, looking down into a dark hole, with a torch lit down below, without nearly as much candlelight power as the outside above the barrow. I'm not actually certain this would illuminate anything, not to someone standing outside . . . ah, but I'm probably quibbling again.

The torch can be lowered about fifteen feet (measured by the amount of twine needed, before the torch hits bottom). I'm still not sure what illumination of the subterranean it would provide. Any thoughts on that?

Because it is an earthen floor, and the actual distance would be minus your height; the surface below looks like it could be reasonably soft ~ if it is, then it counts as falling on a yielding surface which would mean a 10 foot drop would cause only a d4 damage; but you could be wrong about the ground. If the distance is less than 10 feet, I'll allow a dexterity check [writing it into the falling rules right now], in which case you'll take no damage.

It does not take long for Lothar, hearing Rowan's vague directions to the barrow, to find the right path towards Store Stokka Lake. It is a distance of two miles, that will Lothar's direction will take a little less than three hours. You circumnavigate a small hill just west of Stavanger, then move over rolling country until you reach the lake.

The wind direction swings a little more to the north and you feel a little spattering rain on your faces. Not enough to actually make rain, but the hard wind (which has been blowing without let up since early yesterday) is enough to make horses on the lake when you get there.

The shore seems completely empty, devoid of a dock or even a hut that you can see. Lothar guesses that one trail you passed might lead to some kind of trappers' cabin somewhere to the north, probably on the lake, but he can't be sure how long it would take to find it. The best route around the lake is probably on the south, as you have come out on the left side of a prominent, isolated hill, about a 200 yards wide and 150 feet high. It is quite impressive. There are other isolated hills, less impressive, on the other side of the lake.

It is nearly 9am. Action?

Regarding navigation: the "sense" that Rowan has regarding trails, ridges, currents or prevailing winds IS somewhat like the rangers' Pathfinder skill.

Note that the sage ability does say, however, that the character will not automatically choose the "best" route, only a "practical" route. In other words, the route you pick will get you there . . . eventually.

However, it DOES say under the ranger Pathfinder I skill that it will find the BEST route, saving travel time. That means faster, so that the ranger is better than you at finding the best route.

Still, together, you're probably going to discuss, compare notes, that sort of thing. Also notice, the Pathfinder skill doesn't give the ranger actual knowledge of where he or she is on the planet. The ranger measures by the terrain; the druid by the stars.

It is a fine distinction, but given the particular situation, you can see how the two classes come at the same problem from different directions.

I want the party to take a moment and reconsider the plan to take Engelhart's sloop to Sauda. I wanted to write it in a post because I wanted all to see it.

The boat is open to the weather. With the new CLO rules, now that this has been nailed down as a measure, I can easily impose measures that will represent the weather to your characters. For the first day spent out in the weather that you are short of CLO, your characters will take 1 damage; for a second day, that will double and for a third day, that will treble.

Furthermore, if you're out and you take damage like I describe, you will have to roll to see if you catch a malady of some kind. As Lothar already has one, he is at a greater threat.

In the boat, the only person who will actually be working will be Engelhart. His CLO won't need to be so high, but the rest of you will just be sitting in the boat. In this weather, the rest of you will need 3.44 CLO if you don't want to freeze. I know most of you don't have anything like that. I'm going to rule that rain will double the damage as well.

Now, Engelhart can take his boat the 50 miles to Sauda, and he's likely done it before. But depending on the weather, the actual time it takes could be more than one day. Yes, a ship can travel 24 hours a day, but that's assuming the crew has someone to take a second and third shift. Engelhart is alone (I think). If the ship is running or reaching against the wind, he will make 8 or 10 knots an hour, and be in Sauda by the afternoon; but if he is close-hauling against the wind, he will make 2 knots an hour, which means it will take 24 hours to reach Sauda. That's probably more than two days of work, assuming he's willing and able to work 10 hour days (more than that would mean damage as well).

It depends on the wind in the morning - but it also depends on the wind not changing during the day.

In any case, the party might be interested in investing in blankets.

I've got some ability to navigate and combined with Lothar's exceptional abilities, I will put forward the notion of striking for Mimmarudla. It is, upon some examination, approximately four miles west of Stavanger's center. That's about a day, given what information we have about our ability to travel.

If we can get a local to ferry us across the Starra Stokavatn, a small pond that lies between us and our destination, we'd cut that time still further. I assume it would be impossible to transfer the sloop from the bay to the pond by any reasonable means.

We've got a reasonable expectation of some forgotten treasures or magics, our Cleric may even get lucky uncovering a relic, perhaps stolen by the pre-Christian Vikings and interred there.

Taking a popular religion gets you greater support if you need something from a church, taking an obscure religion increases your personal agenda-making. Elves have a 60-foot infravision. After this post, I intend to treat infravision as though someone is standing with a lantern two inches above your eyes that allows 60 feet of perfectly ordinary illumination, that adjusts with the change of light so that when you choose to see things up to that distance, it does not matter how much "glare" exists ~ because there cannot be, by the way that your eyes work.
