Shield creates an invisible barrier that moves in front of the caster and helps protect against melee attacks. The amount of protection granted depends on the incoming attack; but regardless, the caster is defended on all sides, whether an attack comes from the front, flank or the rear.

An armour class (AC) of 4 is provided against all direct hand-to-hand melee attacks. The shield's AC is 3 against hurled missile weapons, like an hand axe or spear; and the caster is AC 2 against fired weapons, like a bow, crossbow or sling.
The spell also provides some protection against area-effect spells and natural abilities, such a fireball or a breath weapon — a +1 saving throw. Magic missiles are turned aside by the spell, so that these are wasted against the shield.
