The DM: Climbing up to the Great Hall, you're free to talk to one another.
+
The DM: I will need to know what your action points are on the cart.  I've created a chart for calculating cart encumbrance, if you haven't already seen it.  The weather on the morning of the 20th is beautiful: clear skies, no clouds at all, pleasant weather, a gentle breeze blowing.  Feels like the first day of Summer.

: At a game table, I'd certainly be asking at this time how the overall was; and how the party feels about the last encounter.  It always helps to get some feedback.
+
: What's more, seems very quiet this morning as you head out on your journey.

Lexent: I make sure to retrieve my godentag on the way.
+
Lexent: Quite.

Lexent: Suprising. I'm glad I tried talking. If Mok-Losh is being honest with us, then he is certainly more than we would have been able to handle.
+
Vafrandir: Looking for my Stavanger sheet - AP shortly.

Vafrandir: Agreed. I always leave these encounters feeling there's more I should be asking but I guess real life is like that sometimes too.
+
Vafrandir: We need to drop about 300 lbs. Max with the mule is 1 AP at 1350 lb, we have about 1635 lb.

Lexent: Yes, but it felt like the lines of questioning were starting to hit dead ends.
+
Lexent: Wow. I don't suppose that's an amount we can spread out amongst ourselves and our hirelings.

Lexent: "So what do we think? Shall we just rely on Mok-Losh to hold Grond in check for the year?"
+
Lexent: I can only take about another 20 lbs. before I reach my max. 9 more will drop me from 3AP to 2.

Lexent: "Also, If we'd like, I could commune with the gods to try to ascertain if Mok-Losh is being truthful and accurate."
+
The DM: You have the strengths of each hireling; presume they're already carrying 40 lbs. of personal gear, and that they'd be ready to push themselves to 2 AP ... 1 AP if you'll provide them a 2 s.p./day bonus.

The DM: One thing you can usually count on; creatures with tons of power and without reason to con you have no reason to lie.  If it was on Grond’s side, don’t you think it and Grond would have just gone hogwild on your selves?  Consider.  Why did Grond not attack you on the surface.  Why was the dungeon so passive?  It never came to you, though you made your presence very well known. The last overt thing it did was to use a dead goblin as a puppet to tell you to go away; and nothing whatsoever when you came back again.
+
Vafrandir: We can give them 282 lb all told and stay at 3 AP. That leaves a little over 3 lbs which any one of us can make up the difference in.
:Lexent: My larger concern is with the accuracy of his claims that he can hold Grond in check.

:: The DM: Ah.

:Lexent: Another possibility is that he is not as powerful as he claims/seems and that he is lying to us to protect Grond who now fears us. I don't think this is likely, but it is possible.

::: The DM: Go fight him.  Find out.

Pandred: That's fair enough. We should have asked about that one skeleton. I forgot entirely in the moment. Either way we'd do well I think to make a quick check of the remaining area available to us. Mok-Losh says it's nothing but flies, so as far as I can tell that means nothing but easy access to what few "valuables" remain here.
+
The DM: You can eat that for breakfast on the 20th.

The DM: In any case, for cleaning the dungeon out to the extent you did, and more or less in a forced retreat, please give yourself a 10% bonus to your present experience.  For example, if you had 3,000, you’d now have 3,300.
+
Lexent: Then I believe we are off.

The DM: You can search for the next six hours but you don’t find anything alive. And there’s nothing at the bottom of the pool, eitherYou can’t get through the magician’s door, at least by any means you possessIf you have unknowns left about the dungeon you’ve seen, you could always return and ask Mok-Losh another question.  It’s not going anywhere.
+
The DM: Figure 4 lbs. a day for travelling, eat 1½ lb. each for breakfast, then at the end of the first day you finish off with 48 total lbs. gone from eaten food.  The journey is, I remember, 14 total hours at 3 APSo it would be 21 at 2 AP ... so you’ve made a little less than half your distance the first day.  That leaves 11 hours at 2 APUnless you want to cache some of your food at the cairn.

Lexent: Mok-Losh did mention the skeleton, calling it a crypt thing and saying he had it trapped.
+
The DM: You have no encounters on the 20th.

Lexent: That is amazing. I am now 4 XP away from 4th level.
+
Pandred: That's almost too bad. We'd have eaten more of our encumbrance. Hmm, but then we'd have loaded down the cart with trophies. Tricky business.

::: The DM: Oh, that’s cruel.  I should throw in a fight with a fly.
+
Lexent: As we set up camp for the night, I cast Augury and ask the following:
::::Lexent:Nah, It'll happen soon enough, and I've done the same to players, so karma I guess.
+
:Lexent: "Is Hamish Ross in Norway"
 +
:Lexent: "Is Hamish Ross in Denmark"
 +
:Lexent: "Is Hamish Ross in Scotland"

Lexent: So shall we call this concluded for now and head back to camp?
+
Vafrandir: I thought about caching but we'd have to leave too much to gain any AP. We'll be fine with the longer travel.

Pandred: Suppose we should. Too bad, I was ready to crack this thing like an egg, but it looks like the wights have already been separated and the yolk is being guarded.
+
Vafrandir: Tomorrow, can you ask if the gold can be recognized or tracked?
:Lexent: Well played.

Lexent: OK, We head back to camp. Let's not forget the lamp oil and vinegar from the wet storage (not sure if we moved it out yet or not.)
+
The DM: The answers are Yes, null, null. You don't get answers for the last two questions.

The DM: Feel a little coitus interruptus? That’s fair.
+
The DM: From the document: “the scroll delivers a land grant to whom is apparently a Scotsman, Hamish Ross, of 8,000 acres upon the island of Askøy west of Bergen, for services rendered to Christian IV, the King of Denmark, against the Swedes in the Battle of Femern in 1644. The document was to be delivered to Ross so that he could take possession of his lands; the document is dated May the 10th, 1647.” Which is odd, since all the coins clearly post-date 1648.

Evening, July 19th
+
Lexent: I can certainly ask that tomorrow. I assume the most likely place for him to be is on the island of Askøy, but I figured I'd start narrowing it down.
The DM: The weather is cool, dry, with a few clouds and barely any wind at all.  I presume you'll camp here for the night.

Lexent: Yes. We camp here tonight. How are the sappers feeling about this outing?
+
Vafrandir: Thank you for the reminder. That's intriguing.

The DM: Well, they want to know if you still want them to finish clearing out a pathway from the second entrance they’ve widened.
+
Lexent: And, if I recall, the airship showed signs of being exposed to Norwegian rains and winters for three years.

Pandred: No, I suppose not.
+
Vafrandir: That implies that the gold is not from the airship. Which I didn't think we believed as a theory but can possibly rule it out anyway.

Pandred: Out for a bit.
+
Lexent: Interesting. The pack in which the circlet and land grant were found was described as "bearing the emblem of the King of Denmark & Norway, Christian the 5th. Your king." Is this merely a typo?
 +
: The DM: Hm.  That shouldn't have been published; it was an error I thought I'd fixed before publishing. I'll clear it up.  Christian the 5th doesn't become king for a while.  Your present king is Frederick III.
 +
::Lexent: Meaning that the emblem on that pack was of Frederick III, meaning that the land grant could date to the same time as the gold, just not the airship.
 +
::: The DM: That's correct.

Vafrandir: Some internet trouble here and there, sorry. I believe Mok-Losh, so let's stop back in a few months from now and see if things have changed.
+
Vafrandir: Also, cultic goblins may not have had much use for gold. Perhaps Ross may have a deeper connection to the Grond lair than we previously thought.

The DM: I apologize.  I wound up being pulled away and I failed to say "out."  I'm moving this Monday and things are piling up.  Incidentally, I won't have the internet between Sunday and the following Saturday, so running the game will be hard. I could stand on my deck and shout, but I think if I could do it loud enough for you to hear me, the neighbours would complain.
+
Pandred: Here I thought we were about to uncover a cool conspiracy with the wrong king. Denmark-Norway got soundly beaten in the wars preceding us. Sweden pretty much runs the Baltic from what I understand.
:Vafrandir: I will also be moving during that time and therefore in a similar situation. I will stand outside and listen very hard.

The DM: In all honesty I was writing a post on the side of playing here and forgot entirely that I was playing hereSo, not actually related to "moving," except that I'm obviously seeking any sort of escapism I can findAgain, my apologies.  I should have been here.
+
The DM: OddMy first draft made that Christian V error last night; and now I find I made the same mistake months agoI draw your attention to this page on wikipedia:

Vafrandir: No worries.
+
The DM: Don’t be too sure about that 3 year weathering; you’re not experts, it’s just a guess.
 +
: Pandred, since the death of Gustavus, Sweden has been on a very slight decline; and with the end of the 30 years war, it is getting embroiled in disputes over the territory it holds on mainland Europe.  It is distracted from menacing Denmark & Norway at present.  This would be common knowledge.

Vafrandir: As I see it we have two major decisions to make. First, what to do about the Swedish gold. We could take it for ourselves and no one would be none the wiser. We could try to return it and gain favor (or be hanged as thieves). Second, if we should seek these goblins and return the shield as a token for their suffering under Grond. I was looking back through posts to see where exactly Arduin said he had heard of goblins - we have no idea where Roxot Horn might be, but perhaps the Father will know.
+
Vafrandir: I assume the king who granted the land was Christian IV. The airship bearing the grant crashes shortly after (and no apparently attempt is made to recover it). Frederick III became king in 1648, mints special coins, and Hamish Ross takes possession of them. Then they find their way to Grond. The timing of the airship crash would help determine whether or not the coins were on the ship, which would be the most convenient explanation for their presence in the lair.

The DM: There’s always a risk, either way.
+
Lexent: Except that the bag at the airship also bore the emblem of Frederick III.
 +
: The DM: Yes, I want to make sure its understood that's the case, my error nonwithstanding.

The DM: Dilhak, quote “Anduin knows of a large goblin tribe east of Bronnoysund. It dwells in the wilderness between Norway and the gnome kingdom of Vastenjaur. Both Lexent and Marcule would know that Vastenjaur covers much of northern real world Sweden.
+
Vafrandir: Ah, ok. So then the working theory is that the gold was on the airship and was recovered/taken to the lair.
 +

 +
Lexent: So, a couple of possibilities:
 +
* Our estimates on the length of time the ship was there were wrong.
 +
* The gold and bag were not on the airship when it crashed, but instead were brought there later.
 +
* They started making Frederick III coins and bags before he was king.
