The DM: I was going to say, a refridgerator is typically 22 cubic ft on the inside.  The proposed cairn looks bigger than that.

The DM: After seeing about the bottle and the staff, once again Lexent gains 2 hp from rest and Marcule 1I’m not certain, I think Marcule is up to full. How is Lexent?
+
The DM: Lexent is assaulted by a flush of who knows how many bats that come flooding out of the darkness. There's no chance to see the room beyond; Lexent is attacked four times and the other bats burst into the rest of the roomLexent, I hit you three times, <span style="color:red">taking 1</span>, <span style="color:red">1</span>  and <span style="color:red">2</span> damage.

Vafrandir: The picture I linked was an example. I agree, it is much larger than 10 cubic ft. But, we don't have time at the moment. If we build it as a square tower 1.5 ft on a side, that gives us a height of a little less than 4.5 ft. I'd say that's a good start if not quite an epic paleolith.
+
The DM: Vafrandir, roll a d6 for initiative.

Lexent: Assuming that that is the healing gained for resting through the 4th, At the beginning of the 5th I will still be down 0.8 injury points and 6 HP.
+
The DM: Those are three separate attacks, so none of them have enough to stun Lexent.
: The DM: We're not at the 5th yet.  We're at the morning of the 4th.  Let's not talk about the 5th until we're at the 5th.  What are you down right now?

::Lexent: My bad. I was thinking one day ahead. Was the bottle used on the third? Those figures would be for the morning of the 4th.

Lexent: Now that I have my days straight and it is the morning of the 4th, I use the Staff to heal 3+2+2=7 HP. I am now down to 0.1 Injury points and missing 6 HP.
+
Vafrandir: 3

The DM: Would someone better than me at math like to take a look at this, https://coast.noaa.gov/data/digitalcoast/pdf/canvis-height-horizon-calculation.pdf, and see if they can calculate how far a 4 ft. cairn would appear at least 1 in. tall?
+
The DM: I have a 6.  Two bats swing around Lexent's head; the rest of the swarm continues through Vafrandir, who gets attacked 5 times as they rush past him into the main room.  I hit once with a 16, <span style="color:red">causing 2</span> damage. The other one that hits rolls — I don't believe this! — two criticals back to back, for triple damage, <span style="color:red">causing 3</span> total. This second attack ends in the bat sinking its teeth into Vafrandir's shoulder, through his robe and tunic, clutching.
:Vafrandir: 144 ft away. Not very far.
+
: The DM: I need to make a correction here, Vafrandir. According to the giant bat description, , the "clutch" only means that the bat will hang on and attack at +3 to hit each round after, until it is killed.

The DM: If it wasn’t used on the 3rd, then it is too late now Lexent.
+
The DM: Both bats miss Lexent.

The DM: 1 inch is pretty bigWhat about 1/8th of an inch?
+
The DM: Cruelly, let’s wait to continue next timeThe bats will be spread from Lexent in 0824 to 1524; you’re uncertain how many bats there are at this time.  We’ll start with the party’s attack on Tuesday.
:Vafrandir: 1152 ft or about a quarter mile.

Pandred: Take 4 more, Lex. That's my bottle.
+
Vafrandir: A challenge behind each door! Until then, out.

Lexent: That puts me down only 3 HP.
+
The DM: Out.  Hope you guys are well.  See you Tuesday.

The DM: Puts your goals for the cairn in context, then.
+
Vafrandir: What are my options for attacking this bat clutching me? I assume I can't swing my sword at it.

The DM: And you can work, Lexent, move around, help with the camp, etc. What are the plans for today?
+
The DM: In.  Been working on the rules.  The bat page is linked a few lines up.  I’ll repeat the important lines here:
 +
: Attacking a bat while being "clutched" gives a -2 to hit penalty to the defender.  Others may attack the bat with weapons, all attack rolls of 2, 3 or 4 counts as damage done to the bat's victim.  If the bat is stunned, it will cease to clutch and drop dazed to the ground.  Up to eight bats can clutch a single medium-sized opponent.
 +
: So, essentially, you attack it normally, but you risk causing bad damage to yourself; the smaller the weapon you use here, the better, as you only need to stun the bat to have it drop off.

Vafrandir: Yes, I view the cairn as a good start rather than a finished work.
+
Pandred: "Odds, get under there!" I'll point underneath his nearest bed or table. He doesn't have a figure, but I'm assuming he's nearby because he gave me the crossbow.  If he's not in the room, ignore me. I'll dip into 1626 and swap to handaxe.
 +
:Pandred: "Get out of the way!" The swarm might blow past us and outdoors with minimal damage if we let it. Find a corner to wedge in and fight from there if you must.

Lexent: I notice that  Vafrandir is still down 9 HP. Would we like to head back to the pit today, and if so, would you like me to cure light wounds first?
+
Lexent: In. I close the door and attack the nearest bat(s?) in 0824 To Hit: 7 Damage: 7

Vafrandir: What's the weather like today?
+
The DM: Everyone stop talking and let me get a post up.

The DM: Just calculatingCool, with a squall that dropped a little rain for half an hour, but that's past now. You have cloudy skies with some blue and a gentle breeze blowing.
+
The DM: Protocol, LexentDid I say it was your turn?  I know that stuff passes muster in other DM's campaigns, but that's why my game isn't a ridiculous muddle.
 +
:Lexent: I'm sorry, you said we would start with the party's turn on Tuesday.

Vafrandir: Let's scout out the area a bit today before heading down the hole. I would like that healing, Lexent, if you'd be so kind.
+
Party's Round 02
The DM: And we will, Lexent. When I say so.

Lexent: I cast cure light wounds for 3+4=7 HP and apply it all to Vafrandir.
+

The DM: When I need to set up a round, it is difficult if everyone is talking.  I joined 20 minutes early today so I could get the round set up and get the game going.  But after saying “In”, you flooded the page and THREE TIMES now I’ve had to rewrite content, because it got eaten.  So, please, everyone, a little patience, so I can get this set up.

Lexent: I agree with scouting and head back up the mountain
+
The DM: Pandred, seeing the location of the bats, feel free to adjust your intended point of movement.  Lexent, attack the left or right bat, rather than the hex number.  Picture the bats, except those two that are hovering around Lexent, as flying through the room rather than hovering; treat them as coming towards you (so you can attack them from an adjacent hex).  Okay.  NOW you can swing.

Vafrandir: Beautiful. I go with Lexent.
+
Lexent: I close the door and attack the left bat To Hit: 16 Damage: 4
 +
: <span style="color:red">causes 1</span> actual damage

Marcule: In. I am at full HP. Scouting sounds like a good idea.
+
Lexent: May it be assumed that the sappers will be willing to attack the bats?

The DM: Okay, you set out to explore the area within 2 miles, agreed?  That’s 2 miles from where your camp is now, at the base of the ascent, not where the cairn is. Correct?
+
Vafrandir: Would my Boxing ability give me any additional oomph on a pummel? I don't want to slice my neck open. I'm not sure if you've covered that ability yet, I couldn't find it on either wiki.

Vafrandir: That is my understanding.
+
Vafrandir: Pandred's idea is good to get out of the way, unless we want to try and kill 30 bats!

Lexent: Yep.
+
The DM: They’ll have to Lexent, out of self-defense.  You kill the left hand bat.

Scouting
+
Marcule In
The DM: Setting off in a random direction, you decide to follow the base of the mountain (that is, the ascent) towards the south; you find a largish lake, about a mile long, reaching off to the south; and you climb a low spur and see another lake, a little larger, that might be a fjord (you can’t see the south end).

The DM: This second lake, or fjord, butts against the mountain; you must either climb three hundred feet up this south side of the mountain, or move southward along the lake/fjord.   You can determine its nature by approaching the lake and seeing if it is salt water; but just now, it is still a half mile away.
+
Lexent: Marit attacks the bat in the lower left of 1524 To Hit: 7 Damage: 3. If she has the AP she will then move into 1626. Vafrandir, how many AP should the sappers have?

The DM: that is, you must climb or go south, because the water blocks your way.
+
Marcule I cast chromatic orb.

Lexent: I would recommend climbing as I believe that would have a greater chance of finding some connection to the dungeon complex. Opinions?
+
The DM: Vafrandir, wrote it on the unarmed combat sage study page.  Your boxing gives you +2 to the normal pummelling, so d4-1, +strength, +1 if you’re wearing gauntlets.  Costs 1 AP to punch.

Marcule: "The question is are we equip to climb?, the last thing we want to do is loose our life to a fjord"
+
The DM: Oddsdrakken will dive under a bed.

Lexent: Oh. I had not been thinking a vertical climb. How steep is the climb?
+
The DM: Marit misses. Treat all the sappers as 4 AP.

The DM: Not worse than the climb has been up to the tarn and dungeon.
+
The DM: Marcule, if I hit you with a bat, the spell will be ruined before you can discharge it.  Do you want to reconsider?

+
The DM: What do Helga and Asger do?

The DM: I trust that’s helpful.  Sorry if the scales don’t exactly line up regarding the locations described.

Lexent: Then yes, up. I believe some of our intent with scouting is to see if we can discover how the skeletal wolves got out of the dungeon.
+
Vafrandir: I'll sheathe my sword and pummel the bat. 19 raw, 18 to hit; 3 raw, 3 dmg.
 +
: <span style="color:red">causes 1</span> actual damage

Vafrandir: Agreed. It may take some time but I believe its worth it to understand the nature of this dungeon.
+
The DM: Kills it, Vafrandir.
 +
 +
Marcule: Yes i will retract that spell use.

Lexent: Should we then say that we focus our scouting on the area in and around the cirque and its tarn?
+
Marcule: I swing at the bat right next to me. 3 - Miss

Pandred: Acceptable to me.
+
Pandred: Helga stays put, ready with handaxe to swipe as they go by. My movement stays the same.

The DM: The tarn will be up and over that grey area from your depicted location; from the “Camp,” it will be another mile, at a direction of 2 o’clock (that last direction was never given)As you reach the top of today’s climb, those 300 ft., taking you about an hour, that gets you onto a narrow plateau, before a really big ridge between you and where the dungeon ought to beYou’re on the other side of the heights that you would have seen on the south side of the tarnHope that’s comprehensible.
+
The DM: I take it you’re darting behind the pillar in 1626I’ll give Pandred first call on that space and rule that Marit moves into 1526Without anyone giving word on what Asger does, I’ll leave him in 1926Any last shout outs?

The DM: Updated the map; from this vantage point, you can see that is a fjord.
+
The DM: Going once ...

Lexent: Does that large ridge appear to be something we could climb with no greater difficulty than we have already dealt with?
+
Vafrandir: Nothing here.

The DM: No, not really.  There's ice up there, and quite a bit of bare stone and falls.  Not really safe to go up there without mountaineering skill.
+
Marcule:Asger to 1825.

The DM: Above you, you hear a tremendous scream, enough to shatter your ears, coming from above you.
+
The DM: Okay.  working on next round.

Marcule: Do i see anything?
+
The DM: What armour did you buy for the followers?

Lexent: Up toward the ridge? or directly above us in the air?
+
Round 3
The DM: There’s an eagle with a 20 ft. wingspan and a large body, twice as long as Pandred is tall.  It is hundreds of yards above you, riding the wind, but watching every movement on the ground.
+
The DM: The bats continue to flush through the room, spreading out into the various corners.

Lexent: Well, hopefully that will leave us alone. Assuming it does, the question is whether we continue trying to work our way around the outside of the cirque towards the east and north or head back to the zone of abrasion to scout its interior. Does there seem to be a reasonable path to continue our scouting around the mountain?
+
: The one bat attacks Lexent and heads off down the corridor towards Vafrandir.
 +
:: hits with a 16, <span style="color:red">causing 1</span> damage.

The DM: If you want to continue east from here, there is easy hiking above the north end of the fjord; then it looks like a cleft between the mountain on the left and a stone hump on the right. You can’t see past that.
+
: Two bats remain to attack Vafrandir.
 +
:: both bats miss.

Lexent: Just in case, I draw my sling and a stone. I watch the eagle for a couple of minutes. Does it do anything else notable?
+
: Two bats attack Marcule.
 +
:: hit you twice, <span style="color:red">causing 1</span> and <span style="color:red">causing 3</span> ... the first doesn’t stun, but it drops Marcule to 12, so that the second attack does stun.

The DM: From here, you don’t see any obvious way down to the plain beyond the fjord; the passage to the cleft is all through this upper plateau (which is about a quarter mile wide).
+
: Two bats attack Asger.
 +
:: roll 12 and 16, <span style="color:red">causing 2</span> and <span style="color:red">causing 3</span>; he's stunned.

The DM: The eagle is not searching along the cliff.  It is wafting back and forth in the air above you.
+
: Two rush between Asger and Helga without attacking anyone.

Lexent: "Well, which way now, my friends?"
+
: Five rush down the lane through the pillars, with three attacking Pandred ...
 +
:: the bats on Pandred roll 3, 5, and 6, all missing.

Marcule: "I wish I had a better idea of what we are looking for"
+
: ... and two attacking Helga.
 +
:: attacks on Helga roll a 5 and a 14.  <span style="color:red">causing 3</span>; she's stunned.
 +
: One attacks Marit.
 +
:: attack on Marit is an 11, <span style="color:red">causing 1</span>.  Not stunned.
 +
The DM: Still working on a new map.

Vafrandir: We're looking for a hint of where the skeletons might have come from - and beyond that it's good to get a lay of the land. If we see nothing then I think we can assume they came up from the hole somehow. I vote we head through the cleft.
+
Vafrandir: We did not. I forgot to ask if they had any.

The DM: It’s about a mile away.
+
The DM: Then they have shields.

Pandred: I'm down for the cleft.

The DM: Protocol, Lexent. Did I say it was your turn? I know that stuff passes muster in other DM's campaigns, but that's why my game isn't a ridiculous muddle.

Lexent: I'm sorry, you said we would start with the party's turn on Tuesday.

Party's Round 02

The DM: And we will, Lexent. When I say so.

Bat Round 02b.jpg

The DM: When I need to set up a round, it is difficult if everyone is talking. I joined 20 minutes early today so I could get the round set up and get the game going. But after saying “In”, you flooded the page and THREE TIMES now I’ve had to rewrite content, because it got eaten. So, please, everyone, a little patience, so I can get this set up.

Okay. NOW you can swing.

Lexent: I close the door and attack the left bat To Hit: 16 Damage: 4

Lexent: May it be assumed that the sappers will be willing to attack the bats?

Vafrandir: Would my Boxing ability give me any additional oomph on a pummel? I don't want to slice my neck open. I'm not sure if you've covered that ability yet, I couldn't find it on either wiki.

Vafrandir: Pandred's idea is good to get out of the way, unless we want to try and kill 30 bats!

The DM: They’ll have to Lexent, out of self-defense. You kill the left hand bat.

Marcule In

Lexent: Marit attacks the bat in the lower left of 1524 To Hit: 7 Damage: 3. If she has the AP she will then move into 1626. Vafrandir, how many AP should the sappers have?

Marcule I cast chromatic orb.

The DM: Vafrandir, wrote it on the unarmed combat sage study page. Your boxing gives you +2 to the normal pummelling, so d4-1, +strength, +1 if you’re wearing gauntlets. Costs 1 AP to punch.

The DM: Oddsdrakken will dive under a bed.

The DM: Marit misses. Treat all the sappers as 4 AP.

The DM: Marcule, if I hit you with a bat, the spell will be ruined before you can discharge it. Do you want to reconsider?

The DM: What do Helga and Asger do?

Vafrandir: I'll sheathe my sword and pummel the bat. 19 raw, 18 to hit; 3 raw, 3 dmg.

The DM: Kills it, Vafrandir.

Marcule: Yes i will retract that spell use.

Marcule: I swing at the bat right next to me. 3 - Miss

Pandred: Helga stays put, ready with handaxe to swipe as they go by. My movement stays the same.

Marcule:Asger to 1825.

The DM: Okay. working on next round.

The DM: What armour did you buy for the followers?

Round 3

The DM: The bats continue to flush through the room, spreading out into the various corners.

The one bat attacks Lexent and heads off down the corridor towards Vafrandir.
hits with a 16, causing 1 damage.
Two bats remain to attack Vafrandir.
both bats miss.
Two bats attack Marcule.
hit you twice, causing 1 and causing 3 ... the first doesn’t stun, but it drops Marcule to 12, so that the second attack does stun.
Two bats attack Asger.

Party Round 03

Bat Round 03.jpg

Except for those who are stunned, the rest of you can act.

Vafrandir: I'll pummel the one to my right. 16 raw, 17 to hit; 2 raw, 2 dmg. Then draw my sword again.

causes 2 actual damage

Pandred: I'll pull Helga into 1627. Is there any way I can shield her with my body, maybe taking a couple hits in her stead? I'll still have AP to swing, I just want a read on that first.

Lexent: I move to 1024 and attack the bat in 1124. To Hit: 17 Damage: 7

causes 3 actual damage

Lexent: Marit attacks the bat in 1526 To Hit: 14 Damage: 5

causes 3 actual damage

The DM: Vafrandir, Lexent and Marit kill three bats. Swing, Pandred.

Pandred: 13+1 hits AC 3, damage is 6+3 9.

causes 1 actual damage

The DM: that's another dead. The remaining bats will flush out the door into the main hall; where they go, you're uncertain.

I'll calculate X.P. Going back to the Jelly.

X.P. for Bats -1.jpg

The DM: Did I miss anything?

Vafrandir: Looks good on my account!

Lexent: Mine as well.

The DM: Oh, one thing. Doesn't change anyone else's XP, but the hirelings should use the subtotals; they don't add 10%

Vafrandir: Ought we to track for our own hirelings?

The DM: Yes. Or make an arrangement for someone to officially do it.

Lexent: I can handle it. I've got a table on my character sheet where I am tracking it

After the Bats

The DM: What's next?

Lexent: How shaken up are the sappers looking?

The DM: Pretty calm. Asger will mutter, "That's twice this year ..."

Lexent: "Shall we try this door again?"
