Round 1
Make each move an individual thread, please. --The DM (talk) 20:16, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

: Waiting on Embla. --The DM (talk) 21:29, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

I move cautiously to 0705 (2 AP), and swing my maul at the ice frog (2 AP): attack roll of 11, hitting AC 6, or AC 5 if the toad's Intelligence is below 5 due to my "Aggressive" trait. --Engelhart (talk) 20:41, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
+
Continued from July 11th
:The creature's intelligence is low enough, but the attack yet misses.--The DM (talk) 21:29, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

I'll draw my sword (1 AP) and attempt to enter combat. I have to succeed on a morale check: I roll a 5 (my WIS is 11). I'll move into 0806 (1 AP) and attack the grey creature (2 AP): 15+2=17 to hit, 1+1=2 damage –Vafrandir 20:43, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
+
Party's Position
: Vafrandir's check isn't really a morale check; it is characteristic of his background, in which he has learned to be cautious before rushing into fights.  The fighter scores a clean hit ... but it so happens the creature is immune to normal weapons and can't be hit by Vafrandir's short sword.
+
The DM: Entering the dungeon, looking around at the scattered bones, Asger will mutter, “Jesus Mary & Joseph” and Marit will answer, “You said it.
:: Because of the earlier time spent withdrawing, Vafrandir has his shield in place.--The DM (talk) 21:29, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

:: Understood. I make it each round, yes? Ha, yes I figured that might be the case. –Vafrandir 23:34, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

::: You'll be glad to learn that no you don't!  Just once at the beginning of a combat.  You're fine to proceed normally.

I draw my battle axe and step into 0906 warily for 1 AP. --Pandred (talk) 21:02, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
+
Vafrandir: I vote we probe the barracks deeper. "Hungry for a little adventure?"
: For information, there is space between the bars to allow a swing, Pandred, though you would risk getting your axe caught in the bars. --The DM (talk) 21:29, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

::Noted, but my AP limits me to drawing regardless. I want to leave space for the door to open so Embla has room and I can strike without issue.--21:39, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Embla I move to 0607 (2AP) and throw my javelin at the toad (2AP). Hit AC 8, dealing 7 damage. A miss, I believe. --Embla (talk) 00:22, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Pandred: Joining Lex in H. "Stay close Helga. Odds, load the Crossbow."
[OOC: in general, I'm going to relax and not strain myself during the weekends with the campaign. I would like to complete one combat round per day, if we could. At some point today I'll commit myself to rolling the enemy's move and transferring material to the public eye, but for the present I'm going to spot work on the wiki as I have been doing.  I'd like to write a post today, as well.  So kick back until Monday.  I hope I don't have to kill anybody's characters. Incidentally, it might have been a real big mistake letting go of the door and choosing to fight; you might have kept the nasty only-hit-by-magic fellow busy by maintaining the threat of closing the door.  Sorry if my saying so breaks some "rule" about the DM not commenting, but sometimes I'm still a teacher]--The DM (talk) 17:50, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

:Yes. The contact would have been clean, and your experience would have told you that should have done damage. Growing up in a world of magic, you would have heard of creatures that were immune to weapons, and your experience would put two and two together.--The DM (talk) 18:37, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

The DM: the far door is wicker.  The wood doors will show a handle.  I’m placing Lexent in 1324.  I’ll put up a closer map, but if you can, locate yourself and your sapper.  Bjarni is working on the rung ladder as ordered.
The red mud creature decides to punch Vafrandir, who is handy, rolling a 12 and missing AC 5 (would have hit if Vafrandir had not had his shield in place; thought you'd like to know). --The DM (talk) 18:59, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

Pandred, the creature will say to you clearly, as Vafrandir lifts his shield to ward off the blow, "If you want to reach me, squeeze through the bars."  I'll need you to roll a saving throw against magic (suggestion).  You need a 15.  I suggest everyone take a good, close look at the suggestion spell. --The DM (talk) 18:59, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

Vafrandir: I'll be a hex behind Lexent - a higher resolution close up would be appreciated so I can see the numbers a bit better.

There's a 50% chance the toad will let go with its breath weapon ... and it does.  The original rule from the player's handbook reads, "All non-cold creatures within 10 ft. of the ice toad suffer 3-18 points of damage."  It says nothing else; usually, however, a breath weapon is a cone, typically 5 ft wide at the base and stretching outwards to 20 ft. wide at 30 ft. away.  So, rather than freeze out the whole party, I'll use the cone; shame this is a monster starting with "T", or else I've have written out rules for it online by now.  It has an average intelligence, so it is smart enough to leave Vafrandir and Pandred to the mud creature (though it could get two), and attack the immediate threat, which is Engelhart.  Engelhart, the breath causes 11 damage.  Please make a saving throw against breath weapon.  You need a 15. --The DM (talk) 18:59, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
+
Lexent: I suppose Marit is in 1224. Once everyone is in place she opens the door.
::: Yet another mistake made: I missed Embla's last move. That does put her in the breath weapon's path ... so I will need a saving throw against breath weapon for Embla as well.

:I roll precisely an unmodified 15(!!), *Phew!*. That's hellishly dangerous, hope it can't repeat the deed again soon or at all. Could my knowledge of beasts extend to knowing if it can use its breath again? --Engelhart (talk) 19:21, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
+
The DM: Um, roll a morale check for Marit.
:: Yes!  It will be three rounds of not using it before it makes a 50/50 roll again.  The breath weapon only causes 5 damage, Engelhart--The DM (talk) 19:27, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

::: Embla I roll an 11 on the saving throw, which is a failure, I believe. If so, taking the 11 damage will stun me. --Embla (talk) 21:06, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

:::: I'm afraid it does.--The DM (talk) 21:57, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

::::: That puts me at 6hp remaining and stunned. Do we have any healing available? --Embla (talk) 22:13, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

:::::: Pandred's perma-salve. But honestly, sacrificing an attack roll for +1d4 Hp in such a swingy fight hardly seems worth the time.

Oh, and I forgot.  The ice toad also radiates cold to everything within 10 feet; that includes, Engelhart, Vafrandir and Pandred.  You each take 1 pt. of damage.--The DM (talk) 19:27, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
+
Lexent: I roll 2+6=8
: Amazingly, I believe I am not stunned, due to the two damage sources being separate. But from here on the going can only get tougher. It appears the creature's spell will cost us Pandred for much of the fight, regardless of her making her save or not... --Engelhart (talk) 19:47, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

I get 19, which I believe is a successful save even without my background bonus. I'm out of the running for a bit regardless. Is it okay if I still offer advice to my comrades, or would you prefer I wait 'till I am able to act of my own volition again? --Pandred (talk) 20:20, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
+
Vafrandir: Thank you, DM. I'm in 1424.
: Yes, Pandred feels a strong compulsion to begin explaining to the apparent demon why her body cannot possibly fit between the bars.  Which would mean, it would be impossible for her to give advice.  There is a clue in the cell description, however, that can release Pandred from the spell almost at once.--The DM (talk) 21:57, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

:: Well, she did take damage from the toad's cold aura, now whether you're willing to count that as "attacked" is up in the air...--Engelhart (talk) 22:04, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

::: It is not sufficient; an attack would have to involve a sharp pain.  Moreover, a pummel or an overbear would be more certain than an attempt to hit with weapon, as Pandred would habitually react and defend herself.  Point in fact, for Vafrandir's benefit, I will be adding the rule of attacking with two weapons to the wiki this evening; the 16 dex fighter should be sure to see that post before giving any action when round 2 starts. --The DM (talk) 23:20, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

::::"Listen, GUY, if I want to reach you I'm not sticking my hands through a set of ice cold bars, you want me to get stuck like some idiot kid's tongue?" The way I see it-" --Pandred (talk) 02:01, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

The DM: Marit will turn on Lexent.

Alexis, I do have a magic weapon, my maul became a maul +1 after being worked on by the svirfneblin. Pandred I am not so sure, as she left us before we encountered the elder Prugg, and I clearly remember Rob and Mikael being with us at that point. I similarly cannot account as to who kept the frogling ring with the trapped soul (evil-tainted, apparently usable for a Hp boost near death), whereas I'm fairly sure it was Mikael or Rob who had the artifact (another ring?) who would summon the valkirie to help us in dire need. This all came to memory because, frankly, it feels like they're about to really become necessary.--Engelhart (talk) 12:48, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

Pandred: Seems like I should have taken all that work you put into the wiki pages for acids as a hint!
 +
:Lexent: My thought was 'and there's the acid'

I recognize the futility of my attack on the mud demon. I will move behind the gate to 1007 (stride of 2, not subject to AoO per my background) and smack Pandred with my shield: 10+2=12 to hit, 2+1=3 damage "Snap out of it!" –Vafrandir 19:00, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
+
:Vafrandir: I admit I suspected it!
: [this is the sort of thing that frustrates my DMing].  Vafrandir, being new, perhaps you didn't understand.  Pandred is Armour Class TWO.  If you attack him with your shield in a normal fashion, you need to roll an 18 to hit.  On the other hand, IF you overbear, then his armour is not relevant; his armour class becomes TEN.  Meaning you only need a 10.  Now.  When you were in training, and your instructor hit you hard against your head AGAIN, what did he tell you about overbearing when the amount of damage you did in a fight wasn't important? --The DM (talk) 19:19, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

:: Yes, I'm an idiot, ha. An overbear (if you'll allow the mulligan), yields a 16-1=15, considering our weights (122/143=85%). And a damage of 2. Do I have that right? I appreciate your patience. –Vafrandir 19:23, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

::: I will allow the mulligan, but I wouldn't allow a re-roll.  If you had missed with the overbear, I wouldn't have let you try again.  The first roll hits and Pandred snaps out of it.  And I want to thank YOU for bearing my growliness. --The DM (talk) 19:49, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

::::Sounds good. Takes all sorts! –Vafrandir 19:58, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

:::: Thinking about it, I don't know where the 10+2 on your attack came from.  Your strength is 17, so it should be 10+1.  The overbear would be 10+1-1.  I suppose I overlooked it because I'm ordinarily not policing you.  Where's the "10+2"?

:::::A typo, and a good reminder to double-check numbers. I have an additional +1 with my sword as an elf, but an overbear doesn't use a sword, obviously. It's a case in point for raw rolls, as we've discussed before. –Vafrandir 19:58, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

:::::: Ah, correct! The elven sword gambit!  You are +1 for it also: 10+2 was accurate for a normal hit.

: Neither of the enemies here have any weapon with which to take advantage of a fast move, so no need to worry about AoO in this combat.

I shift to 0806, formerly occupied by Vafrandir, so as to keep the two enemies properly engaged while Embla and Pandred recover. I attack the red mud demon: attack roll of 19, hitting AC -2, damage roll of 1 (+1 from the enchantment means a total of 2 damage).--Engelhart (talk) 20:22, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
+
Lexent: Hoo boy. How does it react to the door opening?
: That is most definitely a hit.

As you feel sore pressed, Lothar comes running towards the party.  From thirty feet away, he hurls a sword at Vafrandir, so that it bounds and bounces towards the fighter, landing in the adjacent hex.  As he hurls it, Lothar shouts, "Try this, friend elf!"  Then he loads his bow.

The demon turns on Engelhart and swings, missing with a 7.  It will attempt to cause fear in the cleric, with the arc of the effect forcing both Engelhart to make save vs. magic; the demon reins in the effect, however (for it is a natural ability), because the ice toad advances into what would be the fear's path.  Once again, Engelhart needs a 15.--The DM (talk) 15:47, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

Lothar's long sword is in 0807.  From earlier in the campaign: "The sword is reforged with mithril, strengthening it and also giving it a +1 bonus. :Uhmm, those giant toad hindquarters look _really_ tempting, but if they stun me I end up in hell - not an enticing prospect -, plus no-one has moved yet and Embla needs someone by her side (taking into account how these critters supposedly are not capable of mounting effective attacks of opportunity). I attack from where I am (still a flank attack, I'm figuring): attack roll of 19 +1 from flanking, +1 from maul, +1 from background bonus, hitting AC -4, damage roll of 10+1, 11 damage! :: Remember that every melee hex (which includes 0807 and 0707) are still a 1 AP penalty to move out of, no matter what stride you're using.  While withdrawing, it's represented that you're still defending yourself against both the toad's thrashings and the demon being in melee with you (as Engelhart was the demon's last combat, it's engaged with YOU) ... so while you can get into 0807 with 2 AP, and stride while you do so, you can't get out of 0807 without a third AP.  You're too deep into the fight. --The DM (talk) 00:29, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

The DM: That wakes the jelly up. It starts to move forward at twice speed: 1 hex per round.
: Yes.  Please disregard Sterling's calculations on the weight of the gate; it's magical and much lighter.  The demon is not touching the gate; it is holding the hex it's in but nothing more.  You can throw your body against the gate to slam the gate into the demon, but it is only hurt by magical weapons.  As well, it appears to be at least 250 lbs.; so with your strength and size, you're not going to roll the beast out of the way.  I have these rules on entangled and snarled weapons from the old wiki if you want to hit through the gate, at no AP cost.  On the other hand, Vafrandir is going to go to 0807 to grab Lothar's sword, possibly trapping Engelhart in 0806 (as Vafrandir will get there first), or Vafrandir will rush to 0707, knowing the toad is stunned and can't attack anyway, so that Engelhart jumps out of 0806 then Pandred can walk-stride 2 into 0806 (no melee penalties) and risk a hit from the demon before getting a chance to attack.  On the other hand, the demon could fear or suggest again, which would make such a strategy worthless.  Follow? --The DM (talk) 00:30, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

The DM: If Oddsdrakken did draw the crossbow to get it ready for you (and he would do so without being ordered), you’ll still need a round to fit the bolt into the slot.  I concede, that you can do laying on top of a bunkbed.
: Technically, if you check the initiative rules, Engelhart has broken off the fight, even if the players haven't.  So Engelhart does have to roll initiative to re-enter.  If you're declaring a charge, I need you to name your end hex; THEN we roll initiative; if you win, you run forward, and THEN I'll tell you if there are any attacks of opportunity.  The new demon might have a missile weapon.  If you're attacked by opportunity, and it doesn't stun you, then you'll finish your run to your end hex and attack at +2 to hit, and attempt to overbear.  The toad weighs somewhere around 450 lbs.  If you fail initiative, then I move you to your target hex and your round is over; IF the toad attacks you (and it may not, it may be stunned by Vafrandir, it may attack Vafrandir), then it will get +2 to hit you.  If you're not stunned by the toad's attack, then you'll STILL attack at +2/overbear because you're STILL chargingYour call. --The DM (talk) 22:37, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

: Not quite; the sword is +1 to hit and damage against all other creatures and +2 to hit and damage against amphibians & reptiles.  So all together, you're +4 to hit and +3 damage (str + sword, no elf bonus to damage).  An 11 to hit misses. --The DM (talk) 23:04, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

You are one of two people who can damage them, so you HAVE TO. Please!

The DM: you can run that as role-playing, Lexent.  You’re not technically “running” Marit.  You’re saying where she stands, you’re rolling her attack and defense dice; you’re keeping track of her stats and her equipment.  Vafrandir has her equipment and I’ve given her stats.  I will step in and veto if you ask her to do something that isn’t kosher.  That scene with the door was “iffy” ... === Enemy's Move ===

The ice toad makes no move, as it has been told by its master to remain where it is.  Because Vafrandir was stunned again in the last round by the toad, he should, in fact, be in 0709.  Vafrandir, like Embla was before, is stunned for another round.--The DM (talk) 23:24, 31 August 2020 (MDT)

The demon in 0806 decides to overbear Pandred through the door, hurling his whole body weight against the door.  Its weight is 260 lbs.; divided into Pandred's 217.99 lbs. tells the demon has 119% of Pandred's weight; the overbearing page gives the demon +1 to attack; Pandred's armor is discounted, except his shield and dexterity, which gives Pandred an AC of 9.  The demon rolls a 16 (which would have hit anyway), and Pandred takes 2 damage.  It pushes Pandred into 1007 and the gate swings partly open.--The DM (talk) 23:24, 31 August 2020 (MDT)

Vafrandir: Lexent, I wonder, with how slowly it's moving, we should back out into the larger hallway to surround it

+
Lexent: I'm fine without the new image. I think that slowly drawing it out is a good plan, but I'd like to see what we're dealing with first. I move S-1 to 1124, attack with my godentag To Hit: 10-2=8 and then pummel it. To Hit: 3-4=-1. Not that that told us much.

At the same time, the demon in 1008 says to Engelhart, "Don't pick that up; it's way too heavy."  This is a suggestion and Engelhart must make a saving throw. The phrase takes the demon 2 AP to say, and before Pandred is tossed back towards Engelhart, this 2nd demon moves to 0809 and engages Vafrandir (without making an attack at this time). --The DM (talk) 23:24, 31 August 2020 (MDT)

The DM: Lexent, a pseudo-pod emerges from the mass unaccountably rapidly and strikes at youIt misses with a 5But it was a pretty big bit of protoplasm and it was fast moving; as you dodge away from it, you’re very grateful it didn’t hit you.
Embla is able to call back her axe without an AP cost; it will take 2 AP to reach her, however, but she can move to another hex and the axe will meet her there, if she wishes.  Otherwise, she has to wait the 2 AP where she is before she can move. --The DM (talk) 23:24, 31 August 2020 (MDT)

:I move into 507 and recall my axe. I have in my notes for the axe that I cannot recall it and throw it in the same round. Is that true? --Embla (talk) 07:41, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

:: Yes, that's correctBut in the spirit of Thor, let's presume you can use it as a melee weaponI recognize your desire to back off, but it is worth telling you that the toad has now gone three rounds without using its breath weapon, and has a 50/50 chance of using it this next round.  Unless it is stunned, that it.  The breath weapon reaches 30 feet.  I want to give you a chance to reconsider your action in light of this information.

::: Understood and appreciated. I move through 507 to 607, recall my axe, reconfigure it to a battle-axe, and swing at the toad. 11 on the die hits AC 5 for 9 damage! --Embla (talk) 08:56, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

The DM: Everyone fine?

I roll an 18 and pass the save. However this is problematic, as I think I'd rather have failed it, instead of losing yet another 1-3 rounds. +
:Lexent: I took that psuedo-pod attack to be its turn.
:: If you had failed the save, you wouldn't have been able to use the hammer again this entire fight.  I'm going to rule that, because the suggestion did not describe an action you should do (as with Pandred), but as something you should NOT do, the spirit of the spell shouldn't keep you from leaving the hammer on the ground and taking some other action.  Suggestion is devilishly tricky; as a spell, it is damned hard to pin down and I feel the spirit of gameplay should not favour failure over success.  I do think you should expend one AP proving to yourself that, indeed, the hammer is too heavy (as the lingering suggestion makes you believe it is) before using your other 3 AP to take some other action.  Agreed?--The DM (talk) 08:42, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

::: No problem, consider it spent. I draw and throw my warhammer at the toad (I'm very deliberately not going near its cold aura or soon-to-be-recharged breath ability!). Attack roll: 7, a clear miss. And it was a pityful d6 damage anyway, not the kind of thing that I would count on stunning the toad with anyway.--Engelhart (talk) 09:29, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

:::: You may take some comfort from the fact that the toad is at least bleeding 1 hp.--The DM (talk) 10:15, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

Engelhart, you want to pass it to me? I only have a -2 non-proficiency, that's -1 after the bonus, and I have the +3 damage from strength. :: How many AP to reach/wield it from where I am? --Pandred (talk) 09:00, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

::: I'm going to buck at that, if for one simple reason: Vafrandir isn't long for this fight and you probably can use his sword just as good as my maul without reducing our number of effective combatants, whereas, as a Cleric, I cannot wield edged weapons.--Engelhart (talk) 09:24, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

:::: Well, I tried and failed with the warhammer. Here's a deal: kindly overbear me (heh) and take the maul for the next round, see where this gets us. I still have one AP left, if you somehow fail to overbear me, I'll just step off. But keep in mind what I've written above, as I'm presently unarmed and wouldn't want to engage the toad with a d6 weapon anyway.--Engelhart (talk) 09:32, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

:::::I will wind up taking it, since I've got HP and you're unable to. A d6 weapon is perfectly respectable. Assuming when we stunned the Toad at 11 damage that was the minimum value needed that'd be 44hp, dropping to 33, then the 4 that Embla and I did to 29, and assuming Embla hit this round that puts it at 20. 20 at the Maximum. Which means 5 is sufficient to stun at worst from here on. Lothar hasn't fired either. There's a real chance the Toad is about to get locked down if you can get in there. --Pandred (talk) 09:48, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

:::::: I move to 1208 (no need for an overbear attempt, since the effect will wear off by itself and we need all the Hp we can get). And read above: I failed with a hurl of the hammer and am now unarmed (and so did Embla, as the toad is AC 4).--Engelhart (talk) 09:54, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

::::::: Unless Engelhart wants to wrestle Pandred, you can't really stop him.  Pandred, to answer your question, you're in melee: 2 AP to get into the maul's hex; and 2 AP to pick it up, IF it weighs more than 5 and not more than 8 lbs.  My price table puts the maul at exactly 8 lbs., so that's 2 AP.--The DM (talk) 10:15, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

:::::::: Then I expend 2 AP to move into the Maul's hex. I have one remaining, so I should finish grabbing it next round. Engelhart. Please please please don't move into 1208 unless you're going to cast whatever the hell spell Alexis thinks might help us out. Two of us are about to die. You have to put your body in a place it can be harmed, and every round you do not do so is a round you are leaving one of them to die. To DIE. There's some inherent hypocrisy to me saying that since I've been at the gate this whole fight, believe me I know, but at the time we were under the impression it was doing something of value. In the next round or two we're calling this fight - whether we fight to the death with our friends or we get the fuck outta dodge and leave Embla and Vafrandir to start dropping 4d6s again. If you're not dropping that spell then move as close as you can to our friends. We need you. --Pandred (talk) 10:23, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

::::::::: No need to get all dramatic as yet. Embla still has her Hp ring and, before all is said and done, it won't be over until the horned lady sings. :Vafrandir: My longsword. Ah, it might have a disadvantage in the hallway?
:: I'm guessing here. You rolled a "20"; then you followed that with a "14", as per Critical Hits.  The roll obviously hit; no need to follow it up with plusses and such, but okay, fair.  You write, to hit, nat20, adj 23; 2nd crit roll, 14.  Rolled 5, adj 7, causes 14 damage.

::: It was indeed. I agree; I've been bracketing my natural roll like so: [20] then adding bonuses as needed. Happy to do it anyway you like.

Sorry about cutting off your response earlier. My experience with conflicting changes has been that your changes are still on the page, just have to scroll down and you can copy the material. :: I've been copy and pasting, yes. It's not the easiest thing in the world, I don't think the wiki system is meant for quick back and forth. And of course it's rare to have everyone's attention locked in at the same time anyway. –Vafrandir 15:46, 1 September 2020 (MDT)

One problem with managing this format is that soon a wall of text arises, and I end up missing stuff. Additionally, it is hard to get details right in real time.  Above, I missed Pandred's text that begins: "So I can't have used my 1 leftover AP..."  In fact, I didn't know you had a leftover AP from the previous round.  Lots of detail here. Yes, you can use that leftover.  And 0906 can be achieved with 2 AP (stride-1) or 1 AP ("stride-2" or "walk-2"). Revision as of 13:40, 2 April 2021

The dungeon explored so far

Continued from July 11th

Party's Position

The DM: Entering the dungeon, looking around at the scattered bones, Asger will mutter, “Jesus Mary & Joseph” and Marit will answer, “You said it.”

Vafrandir: I vote we probe the barracks deeper. "Hungry for a little adventure?"

Lexent: Seconded. I head into the barracks (room h). Is the door in there wicker or wood?

Pandred: Joining Lex in H. "Stay close Helga. Odds, load the Crossbow."

Tentative locations for other members of the party

Marcule: I follow in the back.

The DM: the far door is wicker. The wood doors will show a handle. I’m placing Lexent in 1324. I’ll put up a closer map, but if you can, locate yourself and your sapper. Bjarni is working on the rung ladder as ordered.

Vafrandir: I'll be a hex behind Lexent - a higher resolution close up would be appreciated so I can see the numbers a bit better.

Lexent: I suppose Marit is in 1224. Once everyone is in place she opens the door.

The DM: Um, roll a morale check for Marit.

Lexent: I roll 2+6=8

Vafrandir: Thank you, DM. I'm in 1424.

The DM: Marit will turn on Lexent.

Marit: “Don’t take this wrong, sir, but I was led to believe I was a support member of this group. I’ve worked for employers before who felt it was the hired hand’s job to open doors into gawd knows what, but I tell you I’m not comfortable with it.”

Lexent: Sorry, I only had her doing that since you had placed me in 1324. I will gladly trade her places and open the door myself.

The DM: I put you as close as you had to be to ascertain whether the door was wood or weave. That’s in response to your question earlier. It’s up to you to change your position once I’ve placed you. The things I say are not carved in stone. That would take a long time for me to do the work and ship it out to each of you by Amazon.

Vafrandir: Now that would be a Kickstarter to remember...

Lexent: I move to 1224 and open the door.

The DM: working.

Some kind of jelly

The DM: You’re not sure what it is; the size and colour are accurate. It is animated and appears to be some kind of living jelly.

Pandred: Seems like I should have taken all that work you put into the wiki pages for acids as a hint!

Lexent: My thought was 'and there's the acid'
Vafrandir: I admit I suspected it!

Lexent: Hoo boy. How does it react to the door opening?

The DM: It occurs to me that Marit and the others can’t see; your bringing them along will have them all light torches, so there is no need for infravision.

The DM: By Marit’s torch, you can see three normal doors in the room; there’s no evidence of any of them having acid damage. I’d explain a little why, but none of you have any knowledge of the differences between jellies, molds, puddings and oozes. I did acids because it was next; no other reason. In fact, I brought it up as a subtle suggestion that you might want to buy some.

Lexent, it begins to move very slowly towards you.

The Jelly

Lexent: Please correct me if I assume too much here. I ask Marit for her torch and once she hands it to me I move to 1024 brandishing it in my off-hand to see what response it evokes from the jelly.

The DM: None at all.

The DM: {OOC} by the way ... I can’t believe you didn’t identify the two potions.

Vafrandir: That'll be my omission. Sorry, all.
Lexent: I forgot about them too.
The DM: lol... I give you all this nice treasure ...

Lexent: I return to my previous position. I return the torch to Marit, replace my godentag at my belt and draw my sling. "Pandred, now might be the time for that crossbow."

The DM: The creature has occupied 0824 and 0825.

Lexent: I load my sling and aim at the Jelly. For future reference, I assume that this is the same action as load a bow and aim for 4 AP, yes? If anyone else wants to go with a plan other than 'attack!' now is the time for it.

The DM: Your sling is loaded. It's creeping into 0924.

Marcule: Move forward 1624

Vafrandir: Ah, should have fashioned clubs again. After this fight, let's not forget.

Lexent: I fire at the Jelly. To Hit: 8 Damage: 2. I then move to 1425.

The DM: your stone ricochets off the stone in front of the jelly and hits the wall behind. You didn't specify, so I assume you fired a stone and not a bullet.
Lexent: I only have stones.
The DM: my error.

The DM: That wakes the jelly up. It starts to move forward at twice speed: 1 hex per round.

Vafrandir: Marit, can you move back? I'll take your place on the frontage.

The DM: Marit naturally gives way. The creature finishes occupying 0924. It will move into 1024 and 1025 before Lexent can fire again. That will make it too close for a sling shot.

Lexent: Even from 1425?

Vafrandir: I move to 1424 and draw my sword

The DM: Damn, sorry, missed that move Lexent. In any case, Marit would have to move out of the way and Vafrandir is moving between you and the jelly. Vafrandir, I took it earlier that you were in 1424; look up. I think you mean you want to move into 1324. Marit is going to 1525, just to get out of the way.

Pandred: "Odds! Give it here!" I'll take my crossbow and move to 1325.

The DM: NOPE, deleted.

The DM: Can we please agree on these positions before Pandred moves:

Jelly Hall 02.jpg

Marcule: yep, i'm good there

The DM: Pandred, there is a bunk bed in 1325. With these people in the way, it would take you two rounds to crawl between the beds and on top of the bunk bed in 1325 so you could fire your crossbow. Is your crossbow loaded? I saw no note that you were putting tension on it so it could be loaded in one round. Did I miss that?

Lexent: Marit and I are where I expect.

The DM: If Oddsdrakken did draw the crossbow to get it ready for you (and he would do so without being ordered), you’ll still need a round to fit the bolt into the slot. I concede, that you can do laying on top of a bunkbed.

The DM: Okay. Not organized today. Out.

Vafrandir: Yes, I'm having some issues today. 1324 is good; I'd meant all the way to 1224 earlier, but this looks like a better chokepoint.

Lexent: In.

The DM: In. Funny how in this repetitive every-day-is-the-same world, it feels good to get up in the morning, put in a movie I’ve never heard anything about and enjoy two solid hours of intellectual, meaningful content and dialogue, without plot contrivances, without people carrying idiot balls, without characters breaking consistency and with people showing legitimate virtuous character that gives you a sense that you’d like to know these people. Most of the time, I’m forced into “protagonists” who I’d prefer never lived, and that I’d cross the street if I saw them coming towards me, and that I hope from the beginning of the movie or show that they get hit by a bus before the opening credits run (about which, I am so often disappointed).

The DM: Ready to game. Hope it goes better today than Wednesday. Perk up people. The world is a wonderful place.

Action

The DM: Let’s start with the positions depicted above. Everyone not on the last image including the jelly can be found on an image higher up, under the heading “Party’s Position.” Please give me ONE ROUND of movement and take note carefully of where other characters are; if you want to enter a hex containing a character, please let that character move or ASK for the character to move before stating your movement.

Lexent: So, to be clear, we are starting a new round, correct?

The DM: I think that's sensible at this point. The jelly is in 0924 and moving forward at one hex per round.

Lexent: Before making my move, is it possible to fire a weapon past a single ally? I found some line of sight rules on the old blog, which seems like firing past groups of allies is the only restriction and am not sure if I'm reading it correctly and/or if that has changed.

The DM: The sling is a tricky instrument. Whereas there’s little problem firing a bow or a crossbow in a tight space with an ally in front of you, a SLING takes up a great deal of space, not only in the initial spin but also in how the stone has to be swung in a level arc across the front of the slinger with a reach of 30 inches including the slinger’s arm.

The DM: So, while the arrow prior to release is still, and can be held adjacent to a person without affecting that person, the sling has to be swung THROUGH the person in front before the stone is released. You see the problem.

Vafrandir: Would it be reasonable for me to notice that Lexent intends to sling, and to move back into 1424 to allow room for that action?

The DM: Normally, yes Vafrandir. But the presence of the bunk beds means that Lexent must straddle 1424 and 1425 to use the sling, because he must have a full hex. You could get down on one knee; that would do.

Lexent: It's fine. It seems as though we are in too close of quarters to continue using my sling effectively. I replace my sling in my belt, draw my godentag, and move S-2 to 1224

Vafrandir: Very good. I'll keep that in mind for the next opportunity. I hold my place.

Lexent: Vafrandir, do the sappers have access to any oil?

Vafrandir: There's some back at camp. I did not think to ask them to pack it today.

Lexent: Do each of them have only a single hand axe for weapons?

The DM: You’ll have to answer, Vafrandir; I don’t know myself.

Lexent: Mostly I'm trying to find out on Marit's behalf what options she has available to her, since I am partially running her.

Vafrandir: A single axe, unfortunately.

Lexent: I think the math on this works, Marit Walks S-3 from where she is to the goblin corpse in the hall. Preparing to bring it back here as a distraction if needed.

I decided to let a morale check determine how she felt about being made point. After all, the ghouls, the bones on the floor, the whole scene is something completely new to her, as is your association with her. Suddenly, you’re shoving her in front to open the door. Seemed questionable to me. I’ve been thinking I ought to increase her morale check to 10, since she failed and your response was, well, a bit wishy-washy, what with the apology and all. In any case, if you want to know what Marit thinks, ask her.

The DM: you want Marit to bring back the corpse?

Lexent: Yes, I request that Marit bring the corpse.

The DM: That’ll take three rounds. Meanwhile, with only the two of you active at present, you’re in the positions you’ve specified and the jelly is in 1024/25. It’s your round. Do you need a new image?

Round 2

Vafrandir: Lexent, I wonder, with how slowly it's moving, we should back out into the larger hallway to surround it

Pandred: In at last. No action for now.

The DM: Lexent, a pseudo-pod emerges from the mass unaccountably rapidly and strikes at you. It misses with a 5. But it was a pretty big bit of protoplasm and it was fast moving; as you dodge away from it, you’re very grateful it didn’t hit you.

The DM: Everyone fine?

Lexent: Are we not waiting for the start of a new round?

Lexent: I took that psuedo-pod attack to be its turn.

Vafrandir: I'll hold for now but I'll ask Marit to move back beyond the beds. "Let's lure this thing back!"

The DM: Um, I’ve been waiting to see what you did after the thing missed you. It never occurred to me that in a one-on-one fight, you were waiting for me to say it was your turn. Okay, it’s your turn.

The DM: Marit obeys.

Lexent: I strike again with my godentag To Hit: 11 Damage: 3. I then retreat to 1224.

Pandred: Still holding. Did we resolve whether or not Odds was giving the Crossbow? If not, I'll request it now.

The DM: Odds hands it to you.

The DM: That causes 3 damage, Lexent.

The DM: With the damage caused, the jelly begins to move away. It doesn't seem to be stunned; it seems to be moving of its own accord.

Lexent: "Well, It didn't seem to like that. What now?" I assume that there does not appear to be any damage to my weapon?

The DM: Nope. No acid. No wood-eating.

Vafrandir: Good to know. Lexent, can you fall back without exposing yourself to an attack?

The DM: He has already. The jelly has moved back to 0924. Not running this by rounds, but as you’re talking, time is passing.

The DM: Your move?

Vafrandir: I wish I had some range. Pandred, where do you need to be to get a shot?

Vafrandir: I have legs. I'll move to 1024 (passing my melee wisdom check with 9) and attack. raw 18, 21 to hit; 5 raw; 7 dmg.

The DM: What are you attacking with?

Vafrandir: My longsword. Ah, it might have a disadvantage in the hallway?

The DM: No, that’s fine; but the sword passes right through the creature as though you stabbed at water. You actually feel the tip of the sword connect with the pavement, but only a touch. The jelly moves back to 0824/25

Pandred: Strongly suspect a shot won't accomplish much. Seems like it's bash or bust. I hold. Lex, you're welcome to chase this thing.

Lexent: OK. I move past Vafrandir and again attack with my godentag To Hit: 3. (0924 I assume)

Vafrandir: Bash or bust it is. I'll move back out of the hallway or at least back far enough to give Lexent the floor.

The DM: It will swing at you as it slides under the door in 0825. I miss with a 2. There isn’t enough of it to hit; though you try, and it causes no damage.

Lexent: I check the door to see if it is secured, but do not yet open it. "Shall we pursue? Is there anything else we'd like to do first?"

The DM: Before you open the normal, unsecure wooden door, I want to confirm the location of Lexent, Vafrandir and Pandred.

Vafrandir: I'm in 1224.

Lexent: I am in 0825, waiting to see if the party wishes to proceed.

Marit: {holding the corpse} do you still want the corpse?

Vafrandir: Yes, let's proceed.

Lexent: "It's looking like we probably won't need it for now, thank you. If you would just set it down on one of the beds in case we later need to use it to distract whatever that was."

Lexent: I'll wait to hear from the DM before affirmatively stating my action, since he was wanting Pandred's location.

Pandred: Call me 1625.

Lexent: I open the door.

The DM: Okay. Roll surprise, Lexent.

Lexent: That is a d6, correct? I roll a 2.

The DM: That's yes, that's surprise. working.
