The DM: It is still July 4th; the sky is covered by puffy clouds, there is no rain and the temperature remains cool and comfortable.
+
Continued from Overview of the Dungeon

Lexent: "Vafrandir, would you be willing to assist me? I can't carry all that much by myself."
+
The DM: Lexent is assaulted by a flush of who knows how many bats that come flooding out of the darkness. There's no chance to see the room beyond; Lexent is attacked four times and the other bats burst into the rest of the room.  Lexent, I hit you three times, <span style="color:red">taking 1</span>, <span style="color:red">1</span>  and <span style="color:red">2</span> damage.

Vafrandir: I'm with you! Off we go.
+
The DM: Vafrandir, roll a d6 for initiative.

Vafrandir: To be clear, we intend to move camp closer.
+
The DM: Those are three separate attacks, so none of them have enough to stun Lexent.

Lexent: Indeed.
+
Vafrandir: 3

The DM: Splitting the party, I roll and no ill-happenstance results from itMarcule is able to get Pandred down the mountain, and might even be able to signal somehow with a spell or something (no idea) to let you know they’re comingTogether, without needing to say so, you make an agreement about some place you saw that morning, so you know just where to meet with each otherHowever, none of you are a ranger, so I will need a wisdom check from every person in the party.
+
The DM: I have a 6Two bats swing around Lexent's head; the rest of the swarm continues through Vafrandir, who gets attacked 5 times as they rush past him into the main room.  I hit once with a 16, <span style="color:red">causing 2</span> damageThe other one that hits rolls — I don't believe this! — two criticals back to back, for triple damage, <span style="color:red">causing 3</span> totalThis second attack ends in the bat sinking its teeth into Vafrandir's shoulder, through his robe and tunic, clutching.
 +
: The DM: I need to make a correction here, Vafrandir.  According to the giant bat description, , the "clutch" only means that the bat will hang on and attack at +3 to hit each round after, until it is killed.

Vafrandir: I roll a 1.
+
The DM: Both bats miss Lexent.

Lexent: 14
+
The DM: Cruelly, let’s wait to continue next time.  The bats will be spread from Lexent in 0824 to 1524; you’re uncertain how many bats there are at this time.  We’ll start with the party’s attack on Tuesday.

The DM: You both find your way back to the camp, and to the agreed-upon meeting place.
+
Vafrandir: A challenge behind each door! Until then, out.

Marcule: I will do my best to take care of Pandred.
+
The DM: Out.  Hope you guys are well.  See you Tuesday.

The DM: That place ... do you want it to have any special characteristics, commensurate with the area? It's alpine tundra, so there are no trees.  Here are some suggestions of what an alpine range offers.  Note the "Features" section.
+
Vafrandir: What are my options for attacking this bat clutching me? I assume I can't swing my sword at it.
: Rolling dice, I do indicate the presence of a single hot spring, so that's probably going to win the choices.  No "chalets" obviously.

Vafrandir: Yes, a hot spring gets my vote. Preferably against a rock face to help shield from wind as well.
+
The DM: In.  Been working on the rules. The bat page is linked a few lines up. I’ll repeat the important lines here:
:Lexent: Your first sentence is almost word for word what I was writing. Hot spring, please.
+
: Attacking a bat while being "clutched" gives a -2 to hit penalty to the defender.  Others may attack the bat with weapons, all attack rolls of 2, 3 or 4 counts as damage done to the bat's victim.  If the bat is stunned, it will cease to clutch and drop dazed to the ground.  Up to eight bats can clutch a single medium-sized opponent.
 +
: So, essentially, you attack it normally, but you risk causing bad damage to yourself; the smaller the weapon you use here, the better, as you only need to stun the bat to have it drop off.

The DM: That’s a safe bet, VafrandirThe hot spring is little more than a trickle; it makes a pool only one foot in diameter before tricking about fifty yards downhill through an inch-wide crack in the rock surface, where it apparently returns to the subsurface.  The pool is about 4 yards from the rock face, which is 18 feet high and forms an angle, 20 feet north-south and 10 ft. east west, with the hypotenuse towards the southwest.   Stretching south and west is a small plain of glacial debris, with stones ranging from fist size to gnome-sized.
+
Pandred: "Odds, get under there!" I'll point underneath his nearest bed or table. He doesn't have a figure, but I'm assuming he's nearby because he gave me the crossbowIf he's not in the room, ignore me. I'll dip into 1626 and swap to handaxe.
 +
:Pandred: "Get out of the way!" The swarm might blow past us and outdoors with minimal damage if we let it. Find a corner to wedge in and fight from there if you must.

The DM: “small plain” = 500 yards across, tailing out where the slope breaks into 10 foot wide gulleys and ponds on the southwest edge.
+
Lexent: In. I close the door and attack the nearest bat(s?) in 0824 To Hit: 7 Damage: 7

Lexent: The perfect size for resting an ankle.
+
The DM: Everyone stop talking and let me get a post up.

The DM: the temperature of the hot spring would be 65-70 degrees C; though of course no measurement of that kind would be comprehensible to the characters.
+
The DM: Protocol, Lexent.  Did I say it was your turn?  I know that stuff passes muster in other DM's campaigns, but that's why my game isn't a ridiculous muddle.
 +
:Lexent: I'm sorry, you said we would start with the party's turn on Tuesday.

The DM: Let’s see; you can’t get the cart onto the glacial plainThe best you can do is park it 250 yards from the hot spring.  The terrain is too rough for the wheels otherwise.
+
Party's Round 02
 +
The DM: And we will, LexentWhen I say so.

The DM: Marcule and Pandred, I need those wisdom checksWe’ll pick this up Friday, as agreedOut (but I’ll check back in half an hour).
+

 +
The DM: When I need to set up a round, it is difficult if everyone is talkingI joined 20 minutes early today so I could get the round set up and get the game going.  But after saying “In”, you flooded the page and THREE TIMES now I’ve had to rewrite content, because it got eatenSo, please, everyone, a little patience, so I can get this set up.

Lexent: That seems a manageable distance. How much farther from the abrasion zone of the cirque are we now than at the previous camp?
+
The DM: Pandred, seeing the location of the bats, feel free to adjust your intended point of movement. Lexent, attack the left or right bat, rather than the hex number.  Picture the bats, except those two that are hovering around Lexent, as flying through the room rather than hovering; treat them as coming towards you (so you can attack them from an adjacent hex).  Okay.  NOW you can swing.

Pandred: 13 on my check. Missed it by 1.
+
Lexent: I close the door and attack the left bat To Hit: 16 Damage: 4
 +
: <span style="color:red">causes 1</span> actual damage

The DM: In.  I need that wisdom check from Marcule, so I'll have to roll it.
+
Lexent: May it be assumed that the sappers will be willing to attack the bats?

Lexent: In.
+
Vafrandir: Would my Boxing ability give me any additional oomph on a pummel? I don't want to slice my neck open. I'm not sure if you've covered that ability yet, I couldn't find it on either wiki.

The DM: Marcule rolls a 12, missing his wisdom by 1.  With both players missing, you get lost ... for an hour.  But that will push you over the top of exhaustion, so its a 2% malady check for each of you.  And you're fine.  The pair stagger into the newly made camp, very tired, with Marcule's shoulders aching from supporting Pandred, who is just in steady pain.
+
Vafrandir: Pandred's idea is good to get out of the way, unless we want to try and kill 30 bats!

Vafrandir: In for about an hour then back in the afternoon.
+
The DM: They’ll have to Lexent, out of self-defense.  You kill the left hand bat.

Vafrandir: "We were starting to get worried! Sit down, rest."
+
Marcule In

Lexent: "This has been a long day. I'll take the first watch while you all start getting some sleep."
+
Lexent: Marit attacks the bat in the lower left of 1524 To Hit: 7 Damage: 3. If she has the AP she will then move into 1626. Vafrandir, how many AP should the sappers have?

Pandred: In. I do rest. You guys can continue scouting without me if you need. I can rest here and handle myself if need be.
+
Marcule I cast chromatic orb.

Lexent: I am content to move to the 5th. I only need four hours of sleep and am willing to take extra watch shifts.
+
The DM: Vafrandir, wrote it on the unarmed combat sage study page.  Your boxing gives you +2 to the normal pummelling, so d4-1, +strength, +1 if you’re wearing gauntlets. Costs 1 AP to punch.

Vafrandir: I'm not saying we need fear the plateau - at least, any more than any other part of this extremely dangerous wilderness - but we might want to consider a better strategy if we go that way again. On the other hand, we should probably go back to the tarn and examine the area around the inside.
+
The DM: Oddsdrakken will dive under a bed.

The DM: Rest starting at 8 pm, so benefits won't be felt until tomorrow evening.
+
The DM: Marit misses.  Treat all the sappers as 4 AP.

July 5
+
The DM: Marcule, if I hit you with a bat, the spell will be ruined before you can discharge it. Do you want to reconsider?
The DM: Cool weather, clear skies, gentle wind blowing.

Lexent: I recommend that we all rest for at least today. Depending on HP we might send a scouting party up to within the cirque tomorrow, but today we should rest.
+
The DM: What do Helga and Asger do?

Lexent: I use the staff to heal Pandred for 3+1+2=6.
+
Vafrandir: I'll sheathe my sword and pummel the bat. 19 raw, 18 to hit; 3 raw, 3 dmg.
 +
: <span style="color:red">causes 1</span> actual damage

Lexent: I cast cure light wounds for 3+4=7 and apply that all to Pandred.
+
The DM: Kills it, Vafrandir.
 +
 +
Marcule: Yes i will retract that spell use.

Marcule: OOC: sorry guys i wont be able to play today. next week should be all good see you then.
+
Marcule: I swing at the bat right next to me. 3 - Miss

Lexent: I spend the day aiding Pandred's rest along with anyone else who is willing to stay and be tended.
+
Pandred: Helga stays put, ready with handaxe to swipe as they go by. My movement stays the same.

Pandred: Plus bottle for 2. 9 so far.
+
The DM: I take it you’re darting behind the pillar in 1626.  I’ll give Pandred first call on that space and rule that Marit moves into 1526. Without anyone giving word on what Asger does, I’ll leave him in 1926. Any last shout outs?

Vafrandir: I agree. Let's rest.
+
The DM: Going once ...

Pandred: Bad math, missed the heal. 15 so far. Halfway is good.
+
Vafrandir: Nothing here.

The DM: Pandred can get 6 more from rest then.  That's 21 total.  Ankle is feeling a lot better.
+
Marcule:Asger to 1825.

Lexent: Ready to proceed to the 6th.
+
The DM: Okay.  working on next round.

July 6
+
The DM: What armour did you buy for the followers?
The DM: The next day, there is a steady drizzle, but it’s very nearly a mist and not much to be concerned about.  Still cool, still a gentle breeze blowing out of the northwest.  How does the day start?

Lexent: Not amazingly. I heal Pandred with the staff for 1+2+1=4
+
Round 3
Pandred: 3 from the bottle says I'll be better by tomorrow. 28 as of right now.
+
The DM: The bats continue to flush through the room, spreading out into the various corners.

Lexent: If we'd like I could finish the process off with cure light wounds and we could all head up today, albeit with our healing depleted.
+
: The one bat attacks Lexent and heads off down the corridor towards Vafrandir.
 +
:: hits with a 16, <span style="color:red">causing 1</span> damage.

Pandred: I think I'd rather sit tight and save it in case of random encounter. As far as I know we're still okay for food for a while here.
+
: Two bats remain to attack Vafrandir.
 +
:: both bats miss.

Lexent: Fine by me. Would you like Vafrandir and myself to do some light scouting around the tarn while you finish resting?
+
: Two bats attack Marcule.
 +
:: hit you twice, <span style="color:red">causing 1</span> and <span style="color:red">causing 3</span> ... the first doesn’t stun, but it drops Marcule to 12, so that the second attack does stun.

The DM: Pandred wasn’t hit, so technically he is the same as 2 h.p. below full.  I can make a concession and allow 8 hours more rest to heal the last two points of injury, so you can begin moving about freely at 5 pm.
+
: Two bats attack Asger.
 +
:: roll 12 and 16, <span style="color:red">causing 2</span> and <span style="color:red">causing 3</span>; he's stunned.

Pandred: How long to sundown? I don't think any of us wants to twist an ankle scrambling in the dark.
+
: Two rush between Asger and Helga without attacking anyone.

Vafrandir: Out. I'll help scout when I return.
+
: Five rush down the lane through the pillars, with three attacking Pandred ...
 +
:: the bats on Pandred roll 3, 5, and 6, all missing.

Lexent: I think then that the best course of action is to all just rest for the remainder of the 6th and start out on the 7th.
+
: ... and two attacking Helga.
 +
:: attacks on Helga roll a 5 and a 14.  <span style="color:red">causing 3</span>; she's stunned.
 +
: One attacks Marit.
 +
:: attack on Marit is an 11, <span style="color:red">causing 1</span>.  Not stunned.
 +
The DM: Still working on a new map.

Lexent: Prior to turning in for the evening I cast cure light wounds for 2+4 and apply 3 to myself. I don't think anyone else needs it but if so, I apply the rest to them.
+
Vafrandir: We did not. I forgot to ask if they had any.

The DM: Remember, sundown is very late at night.  Sundown is 10:47 pm, and it’s not really possible to be in the dark, remember?  Full night doesn’t occur until the 28th of July and lasts 29 minutes.
+
The DM: Then they have shields.

Pandred: I think we'll wait for now. Lex is turning in, I don't want to risk anything. Let's just ding up a new day.
+
Party Round 03
 +

The DM: Actually, not even then.  Those 29 minutes are ‘astronomical twilight’, so there is still light in the sky.  Fun starts when the seasons change and it is dark all the time.
+
Except for those who are stunned, the rest of you can act.

July 7
+
Vafrandir: I'll pummel the one to my right. 16 raw, 17 to hit; 2 raw, 2 dmg. Then draw my sword again.
The DM: the day starts with light rain, fading into drizzle about 9 o’clock am, when you’re finished sorting and feeding yourselves. The temperature turns brisk. These rest days need 2 lbs. food each; with an additional 4 lb. per person who fought with the goat.
+
: <span style="color:red">causes 2</span> actual damage

The DM: I’m not consistently keeping track of the food; trusting you to do it. But I think the last day I actually asked for food to be scratched off (without looking) was the 4th, which means these three days are unaccounted for.
+
Pandred: I'll pull Helga into 1627. Is there any way I can shield her with my body, maybe taking a couple hits in her stead? I'll still have AP to swing, I just want a read on that first.

Lexent: So that would be 66 lbs. total, I believe (including Oddsdraken, but not Valda). My understanding is that Vafrandir is keeping track of that. The Cargo spreadsheet shows we have sufficient for that, but we might be starting to get just a little bit light.
+
Lexent: I move to 1024 and attack the bat in 1124. To Hit: 17 Damage: 7
 +
: <span style="color:red">causes 3</span> actual damage

Lexent: "Shall we head up, Pandred? and maybe bring Oddsdraken with us?"
+
Lexent: Marit attacks the bat in 1526 To Hit: 14 Damage: 5
 +
: <span style="color:red">causes 3</span> actual damage

The DM: You have to feed Valda alsoIt’s Nadia who can feed herself.
+
The DM: Vafrandir, Lexent and Marit kill three batsSwing, Pandred.

Lexent: They are both back in Treborg though, right? Our supplies there are quite sufficient, from what I can tell.
+
Pandred: 13+1 hits AC 3, damage is 6+3 9.
 +
: <span style="color:red">causes 1</span> actual damage

Pandred: They are. Odds can't fight, he's there to reload my crossbow and keep my fighting weight manageable. Since I dropped the Plate I haven't brought him around, but I keep meaning to change that.
+
The DM: that's another dead. The remaining bats will flush out the door into the main hall; where they go, you're uncertain.
 +
I'll calculate X.P.  Going back to the Jelly.
 +
<br>
 +

The DM: You might consider hiring other men-at-arms.  Between Pandred and Vafrandir, they can jointly count themselves above 10 in most leadership points, even though they have no actual abilities.  You’ve led men before; so long as you keep the number small, 1-4, it shouldn’t be a problem.
+
The DM: Did I miss anything?

Lexent: I leave behind my shield and the shattered remains of my Godentag and start up towards the cirque. "Do you think we should try to find how those wolves got out, or plunge straight back in?"
+
Vafrandir: Looks good on my account!

The DM: A trip back to Stavanger would be needed for that; but you could get Lexent’s staff identified and let Nadia’s wage earn it’s value.
+
Lexent: Mine as well.

Pandred: Joining Lex here. I'm okay to do another day of scouting, and regroup when we have Marcule on monday.
+
The DM: Oh, one thing. Doesn't change anyone else's XP, but the hirelings should use the subtotals; they don't add 10%

The DM: You make the climb to the cirque; presume that Vafrandir and Marcule are with you, but lagging slightly behind, so they can catch up when they’re able.  For the moment, the two of you are semi-alone in your actions.
+
Vafrandir: Ought we to track for our own hirelings?

Lexent: Where is the herd(? flock?) of rothe?
+
The DM: Yes. Or make an arrangement for someone to officially do it.

The DM: Drifting to the east side of the plateau.  As you reach the top, the rain has ceased and there’s an overcast sky.
+
Lexent: I can handle it. I've got a table on my character sheet where I am tracking it

Pandred: What does my little spyglass tell me? I know I can't see the dungeon itself in the gully, but let's scan the cirque for what we can see.
+
After the Bats
 +
The DM: What's next?

The DM: Nothing I haven’t already described.  No evidence of other entrances, except that there are hundreds of rocks that could be concealing one, anywhere.
+
Lexent: How shaken up are the sappers looking?

Pandred Yeah, that's fair. What do you think Lex, got any ideas?
+
The DM: Pretty calm.  Asger will mutter, "That's twice this year ..."

Lexent: We should probably start by verifying that the gully is still as we left it, and then start working around the tarn seeing if we can spot an additional exit.
+
Lexent: "Shall we try this door again?"

Lexent: I start toward the gulley, pausing to give the rothe time to adjust to our presence as necessary.
+
Pandred: "Rub some dirt in it and let's move." Yes Lex, lets try again.

Pandred: Tagging along.
+
The DM: Same positions as now?

The DM: It’s been 9 days since you’ve been here, since June 29th.  The scene is exactly as you left it.
+
Vafrandir: I'll move to 0924 before Lexent opens.

Lexent: Good. We start working our way around the basin, looking for any evidence of another entrance/exit, or anything else of note.
+
Marcule: Same position.

The DM: I’ve been thinking about search rules vs. chances to find something.  My thoughts are than the players should have to pre-identify how long they intend to search, specifically naming a “base length of time.”  Consider: say, there is a second entrance here. If there is, then spending enough time will guarantee it’s discovery.  But “enough time” could be days, even weeks, depending on how small the entrance is (goblin lair, the entrance could be 9 in. wide).  You have no evidence the wolves came out of another hole; technically, they could have made their way up the shaft you went down, or they may have been helped, or they may have been teleported for all you know.
+
Lexent: I return to the door and open it again. {OOC} If any one else wants to be the door opener at any time, they are more than welcome, but I am also happy to continue doing so.

Lexent: Well, Pandred, what do you think? Do we spend the rest of the day searching for the possible other entrance or head back in? Maybe we could look for evidence that the wolves actually did find a way to make it out of that vertical shaft?
+
Pandred: I'll take 1024. Helga and Odds can hang back.

The DM: So, you tell me (a) a segment of time.  Then (b) I’ll roll 3d4, multiplied against that time segment; then calculate the chance of finding the entrance against what I think the maximum amount of time it would take to find the lair FOR CERTAIN.  This way, I don’t confirm there’s an entrance; and I’m able to establish that a certain amount of time has passed, without having to say, “Three hours later” when the party could say, “Hey, we’d stop long before three hours passed!”  This way, we can establish within a general time frame ahead of time when you’d “stop.
+

:Lexent: You may also need a variable for either thoroughness or size of area searched in that time. If we search for three hours that could be meticulously going over every stone in a 1/4 acre or merely walking through trying to get eyes on the whole an area much larger.

:: The DM: I think the judgement, “If they looked continuously foot-by-foot over the size of landscape presented, ie., within a reasonable distance that an underground tunnel could naturally occur or be made, given the space, this being a plateau reaching 400 yards from the tarn to the mountainside, recognizing that a watertable would make an entrance impractical within a certain frame of reference, and given that they have no geology or prospecting skill, how long would it take?” is good enough.

Pandred I'm down. However long we have, let's give it a go. I refuse to believe a skeleton wolf climbed a vertical ladder until I see it with my own eyes.
+
Cavern & Stair
Lexent: Let's try this then. We spend 2 hours searching for a way the wolves could have gotten out other than the shaft.
+
The DM: Fairly self-explanatory. These walls are natural stone, not hewn, though the flooring has been tiled.  The circular stairwell down has of course been hewn into the rock.

The DM: taken up with help and then animated on the surface.
+
The DM: There is a passage on your left, the right of the map, which is cut off because you cannot see it’s direction from the doorway.

The DM: Lexent, that doesn’t work for me.  I want a search time that isn’t pre-fixed, but pre-supposed.  “We search for two hours” suggests you’ve already searched the area and won’t feel compelled to investigate leads you haven’t yet seen. Sorry. No.  I want a time segment, and then I’ll roll 3-12 x that segment to account for uncertainty.  Feel free to offer a segment that gives the average you want.
+
Lexent: I proceed carefully around the stairwell to 1229 and see where the passage leads. (Assuming back to the hall, door I).
 +
:Lexent: Keeping an eye out for that jelly as I do so, especially above me.

Searching
+
The DM: Funny you should say that ...
Lexent: Sorry, I misunderstood. Time segment: 20 minutes.

Pandred Don't be a goof, they were alive before they were dead! They had to get down so they could get up! Am I to believe that these three Dire Wolves were carried down as pups, raised in cages, and then died unceremoniously and had their corpses carried out to be raised?! I disbelieve! I disbelieve good sir!
+
The DM: Because sure enough, you see an old friend.
 +

The DM: (I’m not a goof, I’m your conscience; heh heh; maybe they WERE born down there?  Huh?)

Lexent: I work myself toward 0930. What action does the jelly take as I do so?
: In retrospect, we can make an agreement on the number of dice rolled: cursory search (1 die); general search (2); close search (3) and intensive search (4).  Name your die number.

Lexent: I believe a general search will do for now. 2.
+
Vafrandir: I'll make my way towards 0927 as he does so.

The DM: You give up after an hour and 40 minutes, having found nothing.  Or, at least, you decide you’re hungry and you’d like to eatThat makes it 12:40 by Marcule's watch.
+
The DM: You'll have to roll initiative; the jelly will move into 1028, engage you in melee and you won't be able to easily move pastI roll a 3.

The DM: Incidentally, I am accounting for Vafrandir’s elven find concealed doors ability.
+
Lexent: I roll a 4

Lexent: We stop and eat. "I'm finding this searching discouraging, Pandred. What say we take another peek in that hole once we've finished eating? Maybe we'll find some more evidence as to what occurred there."
+
The DM: Move as you will.

Pandred: I maintain the principle is sound, but the truth is an exit tunnel or tunnels could pop out fucking anywhere, and there's no reason to expect this part of the mountain to have one: in fact there's a decent case to be made that it would be silly to have a secret exit within eyesight of the place you're exiting secretly. We can look at the hole.
+
Marcule: Move to 0827

Lexent: Following our meal I head back down to the hole, pausing briefly to see if my untrained eyes can see any evidence that this is indeed where the wolves emerged.
+
Lexent: That being the case, I move into 0928, pumelling it as I go. To Hit: 4

The DM: I’m presuming without needing to be told that you take all precautions entering the hole, at least as far as the shaft and the entrance way to the outer corridor, before the hall with 12 doorsAll appears safe, though the odour continues to be rankThere is no evidence whatsoever of the wolves having climbed up the shaftNo markings of bone scraped against the walls, no place where claws would have gouged out bits of stone, no marks on the iron rungs leading down the shaft.
+
The DM: Patience, patience; you won initiative, LexentThat means it hasn’t moved into 1028 yetYour initiative means that it is still in 1128You're swinging at air.

Lexent: I move to door 'H'. Is it open or closed at this point? Also is the kennel open or closed?
+
The DM: Too, if it WERE in 1028, it would take you 3 AP to get into 0928, since 0927 would be a melee hex.

 +
Lexent: Apologies again. I will make it to 0928 and wait. Hence the pummel for 1 AP instead of a weapon attack.

 +
Pandred: 0826 is as far as I can get, so I'll go there.
 +

 +
The DM: I'm reading Vafrandir in 0927.  Working on next map.
 +

 +
The DM: At the moment, no one is holding a lamp, so you're all on infravision.

Vafrandir: Out, sadly. I will also be out tomorrow.

The DM: The jelly surely moves into 1028 and attacks Vafrandir.  The pseudopod.  It rolls a 12 and misses.  Vafrandir, ring mail & shield is AC 6, with the wolf pelt +1 is AC 5, with your dexterity is AC 3.  Thought you’d like to know.

Bats 01.jpg

Continued from Overview of the Dungeon

The DM: Lexent is assaulted by a flush of who knows how many bats that come flooding out of the darkness. There's no chance to see the room beyond; Lexent is attacked four times and the other bats burst into the rest of the room. Lexent, I hit you three times, taking 1, 1 and 2 damage.

The DM: Vafrandir, roll a d6 for initiative.

The DM: Those are three separate attacks, so none of them have enough to stun Lexent.

Vafrandir: 3

The DM: I have a 6. Two bats swing around Lexent's head; the rest of the swarm continues through Vafrandir, who gets attacked 5 times as they rush past him into the main room. I hit once with a 16, causing 2 damage. The other one that hits rolls — I don't believe this! — two criticals back to back, for triple damage, causing 3 total. This second attack ends in the bat sinking its teeth into Vafrandir's shoulder, through his robe and tunic, clutching.

The DM: I need to make a correction here, Vafrandir. According to the giant bat description, , the "clutch" only means that the bat will hang on and attack at +3 to hit each round after, until it is killed.

The DM: Both bats miss Lexent.

The DM: Cruelly, let’s wait to continue next time. The bats will be spread from Lexent in 0824 to 1524; you’re uncertain how many bats there are at this time. We’ll start with the party’s attack on Tuesday.

Vafrandir: A challenge behind each door! Until then, out.

The DM: Out. Hope you guys are well. See you Tuesday.

Vafrandir: What are my options for attacking this bat clutching me? I assume I can't swing my sword at it.

The DM: In. Been working on the rules. The bat page is linked a few lines up. I’ll repeat the important lines here:

Attacking a bat while being "clutched" gives a -2 to hit penalty to the defender. Others may attack the bat with weapons, all attack rolls of 2, 3 or 4 counts as damage done to the bat's victim. If the bat is stunned, it will cease to clutch and drop dazed to the ground. Up to eight bats can clutch a single medium-sized opponent.
So, essentially, you attack it normally, but you risk causing bad damage to yourself; the smaller the weapon you use here, the better, as you only need to stun the bat to have it drop off.

Pandred: "Odds, get under there!" I'll point underneath his nearest bed or table. He doesn't have a figure, but I'm assuming he's nearby because he gave me the crossbow. If he's not in the room, ignore me. I'll dip into 1626 and swap to handaxe.

Pandred: "Get out of the way!" The swarm might blow past us and outdoors with minimal damage if we let it. Find a corner to wedge in and fight from there if you must.

Lexent: In. I close the door and attack the nearest bat(s?) in 0824 To Hit: 7 Damage: 7

The DM: Everyone stop talking and let me get a post up.

The DM: Protocol, Lexent. Did I say it was your turn? I know that stuff passes muster in other DM's campaigns, but that's why my game isn't a ridiculous muddle.

Lexent: I'm sorry, you said we would start with the party's turn on Tuesday.

Party's Round 02

The DM: And we will, Lexent. When I say so.

Bat Round 02b.jpg

The DM: When I need to set up a round, it is difficult if everyone is talking. I joined 20 minutes early today so I could get the round set up and get the game going. But after saying “In”, you flooded the page and THREE TIMES now I’ve had to rewrite content, because it got eaten. So, please, everyone, a little patience, so I can get this set up.

Lexent: I close the door and attack the left bat To Hit: 16 Damage: 4

causes 1 actual damage

Lexent: May it be assumed that the sappers will be willing to attack the bats?

Vafrandir: Would my Boxing ability give me any additional oomph on a pummel? I don't want to slice my neck open. I'm not sure if you've covered that ability yet, I couldn't find it on either wiki.

Vafrandir: Pandred's idea is good to get out of the way, unless we want to try and kill 30 bats!

The DM: They’ll have to Lexent, out of self-defense. You kill the left hand bat.

Marcule In

Lexent: Marit attacks the bat in the lower left of 1524 To Hit: 7 Damage: 3. If she has the AP she will then move into 1626. Vafrandir, how many AP should the sappers have?

Marcule I cast chromatic orb.

The DM: Vafrandir, wrote it on the unarmed combat sage study page. Your boxing gives you +2 to the normal pummelling, so d4-1, +strength, +1 if you’re wearing gauntlets. Costs 1 AP to punch.

The DM: Oddsdrakken will dive under a bed.

The DM: Marit misses. Treat all the sappers as 4 AP.

The DM: Marcule, if I hit you with a bat, the spell will be ruined before you can discharge it. Do you want to reconsider?

The DM: What do Helga and Asger do?

Vafrandir: I'll sheathe my sword and pummel the bat. 19 raw, 18 to hit; 3 raw, 3 dmg.

causes 1 actual damage

The DM: Kills it, Vafrandir.

Marcule: Yes i will retract that spell use.

Marcule: I swing at the bat right next to me. 3 - Miss

Pandred: Helga stays put, ready with handaxe to swipe as they go by. My movement stays the same.

The DM: I take it you’re darting behind the pillar in 1626. I’ll give Pandred first call on that space and rule that Marit moves into 1526. Without anyone giving word on what Asger does, I’ll leave him in 1926. Any last shout outs?

The DM: Going once ...

Vafrandir: Nothing here.

Marcule:Asger to 1825.

The DM: Okay. working on next round.

The DM: What armour did you buy for the followers?

Round 3

The DM: The bats continue to flush through the room, spreading out into the various corners.

The one bat attacks Lexent and heads off down the corridor towards Vafrandir.
hits with a 16, causing 1 damage.
Two bats remain to attack Vafrandir.
both bats miss.
Two bats attack Marcule.
hit you twice, causing 1 and causing 3 ... the first doesn’t stun, but it drops Marcule to 12, so that the second attack does stun.
Two bats attack Asger.
roll 12 and 16, causing 2 and causing 3; he's stunned.
Two rush between Asger and Helga without attacking anyone.
Five rush down the lane through the pillars, with three attacking Pandred ...
the bats on Pandred roll 3, 5, and 6, all missing.
... and two attacking Helga.
attacks on Helga roll a 5 and a 14. causing 3; she's stunned.
One attacks Marit.
attack on Marit is an 11, causing 1. Not stunned.

The DM: Still working on a new map.

Vafrandir: We did not. I forgot to ask if they had any.

The DM: Then they have shields.

Party Round 03

Bat Round 03.jpg

Except for those who are stunned, the rest of you can act.

Vafrandir: I'll pummel the one to my right. 16 raw, 17 to hit; 2 raw, 2 dmg. Then draw my sword again.

causes 2 actual damage

Pandred: I'll pull Helga into 1627. Is there any way I can shield her with my body, maybe taking a couple hits in her stead? I'll still have AP to swing, I just want a read on that first.

Lexent: I move to 1024 and attack the bat in 1124. To Hit: 17 Damage: 7

causes 3 actual damage

Lexent: Marit attacks the bat in 1526 To Hit: 14 Damage: 5

causes 3 actual damage

The DM: Vafrandir, Lexent and Marit kill three bats. Swing, Pandred.

Pandred: 13+1 hits AC 3, damage is 6+3 9.

causes 1 actual damage

The DM: that's another dead. The remaining bats will flush out the door into the main hall; where they go, you're uncertain.

I'll calculate X.P. Going back to the Jelly.

X.P. for Bats -1.jpg

The DM: Did I miss anything?

Vafrandir: Looks good on my account!

Lexent: Mine as well.

The DM: Oh, one thing. Doesn't change anyone else's XP, but the hirelings should use the subtotals; they don't add 10%

Vafrandir: Ought we to track for our own hirelings?

The DM: Yes. Or make an arrangement for someone to officially do it.

Lexent: I can handle it. I've got a table on my character sheet where I am tracking it

After the Bats

The DM: What's next?

Lexent: How shaken up are the sappers looking?

The DM: Pretty calm. Asger will mutter, "That's twice this year ..."

Lexent: "Shall we try this door again?"

Pandred: "Rub some dirt in it and let's move." Yes Lex, lets try again.

The DM: Same positions as now?

Vafrandir: I'll move to 0924 before Lexent opens.

Marcule: Same position.

Lexent: I return to the door and open it again. {OOC} If any one else wants to be the door opener at any time, they are more than welcome, but I am also happy to continue doing so.

Pandred: I'll take 1024. Helga and Odds can hang back.

Cavern & Stair.jpg

Cavern & Stair

The DM: Fairly self-explanatory. These walls are natural stone, not hewn, though the flooring has been tiled. The circular stairwell down has of course been hewn into the rock.

The DM: There is a passage on your left, the right of the map, which is cut off because you cannot see it’s direction from the doorway.

Lexent: I proceed carefully around the stairwell to 1229 and see where the passage leads. (Assuming back to the hall, door I).

Lexent: Keeping an eye out for that jelly as I do so, especially above me.

The DM: Funny you should say that ...

The DM: Because sure enough, you see an old friend.

Jelly & Stair.jpg

Lexent: I work myself toward 0930. What action does the jelly take as I do so?

Vafrandir: I'll make my way towards 0927 as he does so.

The DM: You'll have to roll initiative; the jelly will move into 1028, engage you in melee and you won't be able to easily move past. I roll a 3.

Lexent: I roll a 4

The DM: Move as you will.

Marcule: Move to 0827

Lexent: That being the case, I move into 0928, pumelling it as I go. To Hit: 4

The DM: Patience, patience; you won initiative, Lexent. That means it hasn’t moved into 1028 yet. Your initiative means that it is still in 1128. You're swinging at air.

The DM: Too, if it WERE in 1028, it would take you 3 AP to get into 0928, since 0927 would be a melee hex.

Lexent: Apologies again. I will make it to 0928 and wait. Hence the pummel for 1 AP instead of a weapon attack.

Pandred: 0826 is as far as I can get, so I'll go there.

The DM: I'm reading Vafrandir in 0927. Working on next map.

The DM: At the moment, no one is holding a lamp, so you're all on infravision.

Vafrandir: Out, sadly. I will also be out tomorrow.

Jelly & Stair 02.jpg

The DM: The jelly surely moves into 1028 and attacks Vafrandir. The pseudopod. It rolls a 12 and misses. Vafrandir, ring mail & shield is AC 6, with the wolf pelt +1 is AC 5, with your dexterity is AC 3. Thought you’d like to know.
