The DM: Following delays and discussion, the players set out at 8 a.m. aboard Engelhart's boat (does it have a name I've missed)? As 4 hours pass, bringing you 4 miles out of Stavanger, the wind stiffens a bit more and a bit more, until after noon it opens into a light breeze, swinging around from the northwest now, so that it is hitting the boat abeam, forcing you to tack back and forth. The clouds have broken up and are light and fluffy, appearing to be thinning.

If you were heading south, you'd be making better time. At 2 p.m., six miles out of Stavanger and halfway towards Jorpeland, it has come the point where you need to head straight towards Jorpeland or turn to the east into Hog's Fjord, for that hex you indicated before. With this wind, you'd be reaching towards it, meaning you'd get the best speed out of your boat, making 2 miles an hour; you judge the distance to be about six miles to the southeast and then 12 to the east. With this wind, you could do that in about 9 hours.

Vafrandir: "Anyone know any sailing tunes?"

The DM: As a matter of fact, I completed my 8th Hornblower book, "The Commodore", just two days ago. And it ends with a shanty: Row, row, row you together at Hampton court ... Rowing in sunshiny weather ... but apparently, C.S. Forester made it up, because there are no lyrics for the tune online.
Vafrandir: A shame that Stan Rogers won't be born for another 300 years or so...
The DM: I own a copy of Fogarty's Cove.

Direction

The DM: Does anyone have any comments on where to journey? I recognize it's Engelhart's boat and all, but you're still a party and you still have a say. Jorpeland, the final destination, somewhere else?

One Hex East of Jorpeland.jpg
Vafrandir: I say toward's Hog's Fjord.
Pandred: Can we get a little circle on what hex you mean when you say "indicated before"? I don't think I understand what choice we're being asked to make. Is it one of the six mile settlement hexes I suggested heading towards, or do you mean the 20 mile wilderness hex? Or a third thing that I missed?
The DM: Map showing. On it, you're just off the point north west of Høle, where the little grey 1 is. Jorpeland is to your left, and Hogs Fjord is the indent that passes Høle and splits into two branches. You've got a good wind right now; with it, you could make Høle in about three hours.
Pandred: Thank you. I am also in favor of Hog's Fjord.

Vafrandir: I suggest we stop in Høle for the night, especially since we'll be arriving there around 5 pm. We have supplies on hand for about 3 days.

Supplies

The DM: Those sailing will have to eat 2 pounds of food each today; all others can get by with 1 lb.

Point of Order (OOC)

Vafrandir: I'm using a little trick to keep from typing my name and bolding at the beginning of each line. I went to my Preferences page and modified my signature to '''[[Vafrandir]]:'''. To use, I type THREE (not four) ~~~ at the beginning of the line, after any indents. Four tildes will give you the timestamp. This way I save a bit of time and I can point the link directly to my character page (and avoid the default cruft of user and talk page).

Pandred: Oh, excellent tip!
Vafrandir: Try selecting "Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link)." One second, I'll get a screenshot of my settings. See here.
The DM: At last.
Vafrandir: Very good!
