Vafrandir: I vote we probe the barracks deeper. "Hungry for a little adventure?"

Lexent: Seconded. I head into the barracks (room h). Is the door in there wicker or wood?

Lexent: Indeed.
+
Pandred: Joining Lex in H. "Stay close Helga. Odds, load the Crossbow."

The DM: Splitting the party, I roll and no ill-happenstance results from it.  Marcule is able to get Pandred down the mountain, and might even be able to signal somehow with a spell or something (no idea) to let you know they’re coming.  Together, without needing to say so, you make an agreement about some place you saw that morning, so you know just where to meet with each other.  However, none of you are a ranger, so I will need a wisdom check from every person in the party.

Marcule: I follow in the back.

Vafrandir: I roll a 1.
+
The DM: the far door is wicker.  The wood doors will show a handle.  I’m placing Lexent in 1324.  I’ll put up a closer map, but if you can, locate yourself and your sapper.  Bjarni is working on the rung ladder as ordered.

Lexent: 14
+
Vafrandir: I'll be a hex behind Lexent - a higher resolution close up would be appreciated so I can see the numbers a bit better.

The DM: You both find your way back to the camp, and to the agreed-upon meeting place.
+
Lexent: I suppose Marit is in 1224. Once everyone is in place she opens the door.

Marcule: I will do my best to take care of Pandred.
+
The DM: Um, roll a morale check for Marit.

The DM: That place ... do you want it to have any special characteristics, commensurate with the area?  It's alpine tundra, so there are no trees.  Here are some suggestions of what an alpine range offers.  Note the "Features" section.
+
Lexent: I roll 2+6=8
: Rolling dice, I do indicate the presence of a single hot spring, so that's probably going to win the choices.  No "chalets" obviously.

Vafrandir: Yes, a hot spring gets my vote. Preferably against a rock face to help shield from wind as well.
+
Vafrandir: Thank you, DM. I'm in 1424.
:Lexent: Your first sentence is almost word for word what I was writing. Hot spring, please.

The DM: That’s a safe bet, Vafrandir.  The hot spring is little more than a trickle; it makes a pool only one foot in diameter before tricking about fifty yards downhill through an inch-wide crack in the rock surface, where it apparently returns to the subsurface.  The pool is about 4 yards from the rock face, which is 18 feet high and forms an angle, 20 feet north-south and 10 ft. east west, with the hypotenuse towards the southwest.  Stretching south and west is a small plain of glacial debris, with stones ranging from fist size to gnome-sized.
+
The DM: Marit will turn on Lexent.

The DM: “small plain” = 500 yards across, tailing out where the slope breaks into 10 foot wide gulleys and ponds on the southwest edge.
+
Marit: “Don’t take this wrong, sir, but I was led to believe I was a support member of this group.  I’ve worked for employers before who felt it was the hired hand’s job to open doors into gawd knows what, but I tell you I’m not comfortable with it.

Lexent: The perfect size for resting an ankle.
+
Lexent: Sorry, I only had her doing that since you had placed me in 1324. I will gladly trade her places and open the door myself.

The DM: the temperature of the hot spring would be 65-70 degrees C; though of course no measurement of that kind would be comprehensible to the characters.
+
The DM: I put you as close as you had to be to ascertain whether the door was wood or weave.  That’s in response to your question earlier.  It’s up to you to change your position once I’ve placed you.  The things I say are not carved in stone.  That would take a long time for me to do the work and ship it out to each of you by Amazon.
 +
:Vafrandir: Now that would be a Kickstarter to remember...

The DM: Let’s see; you can’t get the cart onto the glacial plain.  The best you can do is park it 250 yards from the hot spring.  The terrain is too rough for the wheels otherwise.
+
Lexent: I move to 1224 and open the door.

The DM: Marcule and Pandred, I need those wisdom checks.  We’ll pick this up Friday, as agreed.  Out (but I’ll check back in half an hour).
+
The DM: working.

Lexent: That seems a manageable distance. How much farther from the abrasion zone of the cirque are we now than at the previous camp?
+

Pandred: 13 on my check. Missed it by 1.
+
The DM: You’re not sure what it is; the size and colour are accurate. It is animated and appears to be some kind of living jelly.

The DM: In.  I need that wisdom check from Marcule, so I'll have to roll it.
+
Pandred: Seems like I should have taken all that work you put into the wiki pages for acids as a hint!
 +
:Lexent: My thought was 'and there's the acid'

Lexent: In.
+
:Vafrandir: I admit I suspected it!
 +

 +

 +
Lexent: Hoo boy. How does it react to the door opening?

The DM: Marcule rolls a 12, missing his wisdom by 1.  With both players missing, you get lost ... for an hour.  But that will push you over the top of exhaustion, so its a 2% malady check for each of you.  And you're fine.  The pair stagger into the newly made camp, very tired, with Marcule's shoulders aching from supporting Pandred, who is just in steady pain.
+
The DM: It occurs to me that Marit and the others can’t see; your bringing them along will have them all light torches, so there is no need for infravision.

Vafrandir: In for about an hour then back in the afternoon.
+
The DM: By Marit’s torch, you can see three normal doors in the room; there’s no evidence of any of them having acid damage.  I’d explain a little why, but none of you have any knowledge of the differences between jellies, molds, puddings and oozes.  I did acids because it was next; no other reason.  In fact, I brought it up as a subtle suggestion that you might want to buy some.
 +
: Lexent, it begins to move very slowly towards you.

Vafrandir: "We were starting to get worried! Sit down, rest."
+
The Jelly
 +
Lexent: Please correct me if I assume too much here. I ask Marit for her torch and once she hands it to me I move to 1024 brandishing it in my off-hand to see what response it evokes from the jelly.
 +
: The DM: None at all.

Lexent: "This has been a long day. I'll take the first watch while you all start getting some sleep."
+
The DM: {OOC} by the way ... I can’t believe you didn’t identify the two potions.
 +
:Vafrandir: That'll be my omission. Sorry, all.
 +
:Lexent: I forgot about them too.
 +
:: The DM: lol... I give you all this nice treasure ...

Pandred: In. I do rest. You guys can continue scouting without me if you need. I can rest here and handle myself if need be.
+
Lexent: I return to my previous position. I return the torch to Marit, replace my godentag at my belt and draw my sling. "Pandred, now might be the time for that crossbow."

Lexent: I am content to move to the 5th. I only need four hours of sleep and am willing to take extra watch shifts.
+
The DM: The creature has occupied 0824 and 0825.

Vafrandir: I'm not saying we need fear the plateau - at least, any more than any other part of this extremely dangerous wilderness - but we might want to consider a better strategy if we go that way again. On the other hand, we should probably go back to the tarn and examine the area around the inside.
+
Lexent: I load my sling and aim at the Jelly. For future reference, I assume that this is the same action as load a bow and aim for 4 AP, yes? If anyone else wants to go with a plan other than 'attack!' now is the time for it.

The DM: Rest starting at 8 pm, so benefits won't be felt until tomorrow evening.
+
The DM: Your sling is loaded.  It's creeping into 0924.

July 5
+
Marcule: Move forward 1624
The DM: Cool weather, clear skies, gentle wind blowing.

Lexent: I recommend that we all rest for at least today. Depending on HP we might send a scouting party up to within the cirque tomorrow, but today we should rest.
+
Vafrandir: Ah, should have fashioned clubs again. After this fight, let's not forget.

Lexent: I use the staff to heal Pandred for 3+1+2=6.
+
Lexent: I fire at the Jelly. To Hit: 8 Damage: 2. I then move to 1425.
 +
: The DM: your stone ricochets off the stone in front of the jelly and hits the wall behind.  You didn't specify, so I assume you fired a stone and not a bullet.
 +
::Lexent: I only have stones.
 +
::: The DM: my error.

Lexent: I cast cure light wounds for 3+4=7 and apply that all to Pandred.
+
The DM: That wakes the jelly up.  It starts to move forward at twice speed: 1 hex per round.

Marcule: OOC: sorry guys i wont be able to play today. next week should be all good see you then.
+
Vafrandir: Marit, can you move back? I'll take your place on the frontage.

Lexent: I spend the day aiding Pandred's rest along with anyone else who is willing to stay and be tended.
+
The DM: Marit naturally gives way.  The creature finishes occupying 0924.  It will move into 1024 and 1025 before Lexent can fire again.  That will make it too close for a sling shot.
 +
:Lexent: Even from 1425?

Pandred: Plus bottle for 2. 9 so far.
+
Vafrandir: I move to 1424 and draw my sword

Vafrandir: I agree. Let's rest.
+
The DM: Damn, sorry, missed that move Lexent.  In any case, Marit would have to move out of the way and Vafrandir is moving between you and the jelly.  Vafrandir, I took it earlier that you were in 1424; look up.  I think you mean you want to move into 1324. Marit is going to 1525, just to get out of the way.

Pandred: Bad math, missed the heal. 15 so far. Halfway is good.
+
Pandred: "Odds! Give it here!" I'll take my crossbow and move to 1325.
 +
: The DM: NOPE, deleted.

The DM: Pandred can get 6 more from rest then.  That's 21 total.  Ankle is feeling a lot better.
+
The DM: Can we please agree on these positions before Pandred moves:
 +

Lexent: Ready to proceed to the 6th.
+
Marcule: yep, i'm good there

July 6
+
The DM: Pandred, there is a bunk bed in 1325With these people in the way, it would take you two rounds to crawl between the beds and on top of the bunk bed in 1325 so you could fire your crossbow.  Is your crossbow loaded?  I saw no note that you were putting tension on it so it could be loaded in one roundDid I miss that?
The DM: The next day, there is a steady drizzle, but it’s very nearly a mist and not much to be concerned aboutStill cool, still a gentle breeze blowing out of the northwestHow does the day start?

Lexent: Not amazingly. I heal Pandred with the staff for 1+2+1=4
+
Lexent: Marit and I are where I expect.

Pandred: 3 from the bottle says I'll be better by tomorrow. 28 as of right now.
+
The DM: If Oddsdrakken did draw the crossbow to get it ready for you (and he would do so without being ordered), you’ll still need a round to fit the bolt into the slot.  I concede, that you can do laying on top of a bunkbed.

Lexent: If we'd like I could finish the process off with cure light wounds and we could all head up today, albeit with our healing depleted.
+
The DM: Okay.  Not organized today.  Out.

Pandred: I think I'd rather sit tight and save it in case of random encounter. As far as I know we're still okay for food for a while here.
+
Vafrandir: Yes, I'm having some issues today. 1324 is good; I'd meant all the way to 1224 earlier, but this looks like a better chokepoint.

Lexent: Fine by me. Would you like Vafrandir and myself to do some light scouting around the tarn while you finish resting?
+
Lexent: In.

The DM: Pandred wasn’t hit, so technically he is the same as 2 h.p. below full.  I can make a concession and allow 8 hours more rest to heal the last two points of injury, so you can begin moving about freely at 5 pm.
+
The DM: In.  Funny how in this repetitive every-day-is-the-same world, it feels good to get up in the morning, put in a movie I’ve never heard anything about and enjoy two solid hours of intellectual, meaningful content and dialogue, without plot contrivances, without people carrying idiot balls, without characters breaking consistency and with people showing legitimate virtuous character that gives you a sense that you’d like to know these peopleMost of the time, I’m forced into “protagonists” who I’d prefer never lived, and that I’d cross the street if I saw them coming towards me, and that I hope from the beginning of the movie or show that they get hit by a bus before the opening credits run (about which, I am so often disappointed).

Pandred: How long to sundown? I don't think any of us wants to twist an ankle scrambling in the dark.
+
The DM: Ready to game.  Hope it goes better today than Wednesday.  Perk up people.  The world is a wonderful place.

Vafrandir: Out. I'll help scout when I return.
