Notes:

  • In bringing the account over from the original blog links have been updated to current resources, such as the current Authentic D&D wiki, where possible.
  • Dates have been adjusted as it was discovered that the characters were mistaken about the year while in Norway. What they thought was 1650 was actually 1649.
  • Technical issues are preventing images from being loaded to this site. If you wish to view any images you will have to follow the links to the original blog.

Campaign History

Preparation for the campaign took place on the individual character creation pages for Rowan, Aleksandra, Gudbrand, Lothar, and Engelhart; and on Stavanger Market.

Start of the campaign Beginning on 18 April 165049 in Stavanger, Rogaland, Norway. Played starting 4 December 2016.

The first Mimmarudlan Expedition

  • The party decided to explore ancient druidic ruins near Stavanger which were identified through the druid, Rowan's knowledge.
  • Travels to the general area of a barrow, Mimmarudla, and searches until it is found.
  • Entered the barrow and disturbed a nest of fire beetles.
  • The fire beetles killed Rowan, Aleksandra, and Gudbrand.
  • Lothar and Engelhart escaped and retreated to Stavanger.

The second Mimmarudlan Expedition

  • A week later Lothar and Engelhart recount their story to Embla and Pandred whom they meet at The Greasy Cod.
  • They decide to return to recover the bodies of their fallen comrades and continue exploring.
  • They hire Lothar's retainers and Embla's friends to assist them.
  • They return to the Mimmarudla and eliminate the beetles, recovering their friends' remains.
  • They find the remains of a strangely shaped humanoid in a sarcophagus, buried with a carved lamp which opened a secret door leading lower into the barrow when lit.
  • The party finds and destroys some wood golem guardians.
  • They descend deeper and find a path leading past some carved stone statuettes to a room with large frog statues, a stone chest and four translucent frog-like humanoids floating in the air.
  • The party attempts to take the book and the froglings become corporeal and attack.
  • After the froglings are defeated, the party takes the book and statuettes and retreats to Stavanger to recover.
  • In town, Lothar sells the book and statuettes to a local apothecary.

The third Mimmarudlan Expedition

  • While recovering in preparation for a third expedition, the party hears that there have been attacks in the area that may be a result of their actions at Mimmarudla.
  • Concerned that they might be blamed for the resultant deaths, they decide to travel out of the area to plan their next move.
  • On their way they encounter the local military and are then swept up in a military operation against the froglings.
  • They fight a group of them and are then able to get behind enemy lines and explore a different entrance into their lair.
  • In the lair they find a huge canine-headed humanoid (likely represented by one of the statuettes found earlier) which they barely managed to slay, despite it already being wounded (seemingly in a previous fight with newly awakened froglings).
  • Learned that the froglings were retreating to their lair and were forced to escape through a tunnel out to sea.
  • Rescued and brought back to Stavanger and lauded as heroes by local government officials.
  • Rests and uses their rewards to re-equip in preparation for another expedition.

The fourth Mimmarudlan Expedition

The party then sets off searching for some of their hirelings. They discover that they did not all survive the frogling battle, but those that did were once again at the barrow, now the site of a scavenging operation. They decide to once again test their mettle against the froglings, meeting Rob Munro and Mikael on their way into the depths of the earth. They learned the horrific history of the abduction and sacrifice of human and demi-human victims as they travelled the same path, fighting vermin and demons along the way. They learned that the souls of those victims were trapped in a frozen lake by demons and ice toads. They determine to free those souls. They find a friendly clan of Svirfneblin who improve their weapons to be able to combat the demons. They cross the lake, fight demons and ice toads and manage to close the gate through which they have been travelling.
